In a winch-motor incorporating an electromagnetically-operated friction brake 7, the motor bearing 2 adjacent the brake is protected from the heat it generates by cooling air flowing through a passage 16 between the brake and the motor end shield 3. The motor housing 4 is provided with radial fins 5 and the end shield with fins 17, cooled by this air flow which is produced by a fan (not shown). Specification 883,980 is referred to.
