Abstract
Disclosed is a method for producing a glyphosate composition comprising a glyphosate salt and an alkoxylated amine surfactant wherein a mixture of base and alkoxylated amine surfactant is added to glyphosate free acid so that a glyphosate salt is formed in situ in the presence of the alkoxylated amine surfactant.
Description
A METHOD FOR PRODUCING A GLYPHOSATE COMPOSITION
The present invention relates to a method for producing a glyphosate composition, and more particularly to a method for producing a formulated glyphosate solution from glyphosate and water, monoisopropylamine and a surfactant.
Glyphosate is a we11known non-selective herbicide absorbed by foliage in a plant with rapid translocation throughout the plant. It is used to control a great variety of annual, biennial and perennial grasses, sedges, broad-leaved weeds and woody shrubs. In the free acid form, glyphosate has low water-solubility, and because of this, commercial compositions usually contain a water-soluble salt. In the wellknown herbicide sold by Monsanto under the name Roundup (Registered Trade Mark), for example, glyphosate is present as the monoisopropylamine salt.
European Patent Application No. 0290416A2 discloses improved glyphosate compositions comprising a mixture of a solubilised glyphosate component and a lipophilic fatty amine ethoxylate surfactant in a ratio of from about 1:1.75 to about 6:1. Also disclosed is a method for preparing a solution of solubilised glyphosate acid comprising mixing the free acid with an alkoxylated amine surfactant in an aqueous medium. Additional glyphosate may be added in salt form.
*>64134
It is an object of the present invention to provide a method for producing a glyphosate composition comprising water, a glyphosate salt and an ethoxylated amine surfactant wherein the glyphosate salt is formed in situ. This allows for a shorter batch time and reduces solvent lost during the reaction.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a method for producing a glyphosate composition comprising a glyphosate salt and an alkoxylated amine surfactant, characterized in that a mixture of base and alkoxylated amine surfactant is added to glyphosate free acid so that a glyphosate salt is formed in situ in the presence of the alkoxylated amine surfactant.
Preferably the base is monoisopropylamine and the surfactant is ethoxylated tallow amine.
Preferably, the glyphosate free acid and water mixture should be cooled to about 10°C before commencing the addition of the base and surfactant, and the contents of the reaction vessel should be kept at a temperature of from about 10 to 25°C throughout the addition.
Further preferably, the base and surfactant should be charged so that the temperature of the mixture does not exceed 25°C. More preferably, the temperature should not exceed 20°C.
Suitably the addition time for the base and surfactant may be between 1 and 3 hours.
EXAMPLE
V
To a reaction vessel charged with water (1020 litres) was added 95% technical glyphosate acid (1895 kg). The contents of the vessel X were cooled to 10°C or less.
Ethoxylated tallow amine surfactant (887 kg) and monoisopropylamine (705 kg) were mixed in an additon tank and then added to the reaction vessel over a period of from 1 to 3 hours, during which time the reaction mixture was kept below 25°C.
Thirty minutes after addition of the ethoxylated tallow amine/ monoisopropylamine mixture, all of the glyphosate acid was found to have reacted to form the monoisopropylamine salt of glyphosate, yielding the formulated composition.
