この発明は、たとえばレーザを用いた複写機・ファクシミリ・プリンタやそれらの複合機など、電子写真方式を用いて像担持体上に形成した画像を転写して用紙等の記録媒体に記録を行う画像形成装置に関する。

【従来の技術】
従来、この種の画像形成装置では、たとえばメンテナンス時に、装置本体の本体カバーを開いたとき、像担持体を保護すべく、その本体カバーの開動作と連動して像担持体保護カバーを閉じ、その保護カバーで像担持体を被う構成としたものがある。

たとえば図8に示すように、装置本体内に取り付けるプロセスカートリッジ1内にドラム状の像担持体2を備えるとともに、該プロセスカートリッジ1で像担持体保護カバー3を支軸4を中心として開閉自在に支持し、その保護カバー3と一体に回動するギヤ5を同じく支軸4を中心として回転自在に設けていた。
