近時において、下水道事業は急速に進展しつつあり、巨大地下施設の管路は各市町村の地下に網目状に張り巡らされている。そしてこれらの管路の保全管理を行う為に道路上の各所にマンホールが設けられている。そして一般にマンホールでは、受け枠が地面に固定され、それに蓋が蝶番金具を介して開閉自在に設けられている。そしてマンホールおよび管路内の圧力上昇を防ぎ、かつ、雨水を流下させるため、蓋には流体孔が設けられている。
