【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は番組探索方法に関し、さらに詳しくは将来のある日時のときに見たり、録画したりするために所望の番組を探索する番組探索方法に関する。

なお、本明細書の記述は本件出願の優先権の基礎たる米国特許出願第６０／００６，８８９号（１９９５年１１月１７日出願）および米国特許出願第０８／６８７，２８５号（１９９６年７月２５日出願）の明細書の記載に基づくものであって、当該米国特許出願の番号を参照することによって当該米国特許出願の明細書の記載内容が本明細書の一部分を構成するものとする。

【従来の技術】
ＴＶスケジューラやＶＣＲ（ビデオカセットレコーダ；なお日本では一般にＶＴＲという）、衛星受信装置のような最新のテレビジョン・システムの番組（プログラミング）は利用可能なチャネルの数が最近では劇的に増加していることから、ますます複雑化している。例えば、ＲＣＡ（登録商標）ＤＳＳ（登録商標）直接放送衛星受信装置では、選択できるチャネル数が１５０チャネルにもなっている。今まで、特定の映画の放映といったような、非定期的にスケジュールされる特定のテレビ番組（テレビジョン・プログラム）を録画（レコーディング）したいと望んだときには、ユーザ（利用者）は、ことによったらその映画が載っているのではないかと期待して、地元の新聞に印刷されているテレビ番組予定表（テレビジョン・スケジュール）を定期的に調べるのが普通であった。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
このようなやり方は、調べようとするテレビチャネル予定表（テレビジョン・チャネル・スケジュール）がわずかであるときは効果的であるかもしれないが、テレビジョン・チャネルが１５０チャネルもあるときは、視聴者が毎週番組予定表全体を調べることができるとは思われない。このような作業は、ある種のテレビ番組リスト（テレビジョン・プログラム・リスト）がそうであるように、映画のすべてが独立してリストされているような場合であっても、敬遠されるであろう。その結果として考えられることは、チャネル数が増加していくと、ある番組が一回だけ現れるものを見つける（これは砂の中からダイヤモンドを見つけるようなものである）成功率はますます乏しくなっていく。

本発明は、上述の点に鑑みてなされたもので、その目的は、ユーザが見たいと思う将来放映される番組を番組案内リストから自動的にサーチし、一致した番組が見つかった時にはユーザにその番組を通知できる番組探索方法を提供することにある。

【課題を解決するための手段】
上記目的を達成するため、本発明は、番組の選択のために番組の案内情報をサーチする方法において、表示する番組案内リスト情報を生成し、一緒に連係された２つの別々のサーチ条件からなる連結サーチ条件を生成して保存し、前記連結サーチ条件に応じて、前記連結サーチ条件を満たす第１の番組を検出するために、前記番組案内リスト情報に関する補助テキストのサーチを開始し、ユーザが指示した入力に応答して、前記連結サーチ条件を満たす第２の番組を検出するために、前記補助テキストのサーチを継続し、前記連結サーチ条件を満たす前記第１の番組と前記第２の番組を、前記番組案内リスト情報を用いて逐次強調表示することを含むことを特徴とする。

【発明の実施の形態】
以下、図面を参照して、本発明の実施の形態を詳細に説明する。

ＲＣＡ（登録商標）ＤＳＳ（登録商標）直接放送衛星システムやStarsight(登録商標）などのようなテレビジョン・システムでは、加入者のテレビジョン受信装置に表示されるチャネル案内（チャネル・ガイド）を送信している。

図１〜図３は、例えば、Thomson Consumer Electronics, Inc.（米国インディアナ州インディアナポリス）製のＲＣＡ（登録商標）ＤＳＳ（登録商標）直接放送衛星受信システムから得られた番組案内の画面表示（プログラム・ガイド・スクリーン・ディスプレイ）を示している。ユーザは、カーソル（リモート・コントロールの上向き、下向き、右向きおよび左向きのコントロール・キー（図示せず）の操作を通して）を、望みの番組の名前を収めている番組案内画面表示のブロック（枠）まで動かすことによって、番組案内の中から１つの番組を見るために選択している。リモート・コントロールの選択キー（SELECTキー）が押されると、カーソルの現在のｘ、ｙ位置が評価されて、バーチャル（仮想）チャネルと番組時間情報が導出されるようになっている。図１の例では、特定のテレビ番組（テレビジョン・ショー）、EVENING NEWS（イブニング・ニュース）がハイライト（強調）され、リモート・コントロール・ユニット（例えば、図６の４５０Ｒ）上のカーソル・キーを使用することによって選択されるようになっている。このハイライトは、図１〜図３に番組タイトルを取り囲む太線の枠によって示されている。通常、選択キーを押すと、関係の番組データがプログラミング・ユニットへ転送される。

ここで、図１に示すように、"ENTER ALL OR PART OF A PROGRAM NAME TO SEARCH" （「サーチしたい番組名の全部または一部を入力すること」）" というフレーズ（成句）が図の一番下に現れていることに注目してほしい。この場合、"HOME （家）" というワード（単語）がユーザによって入力される。次に、メニューキー（MENUキー）を押すと、その番組タイトルに"HOME"という単語を含んでいて、次に出現するテレビ番組を見つけるためにチャネル案内情報のサーチが行われる。このサーチが完了すると、図２の画面表示が生成される。図２から明らかなように、"HOME IMPROVEMENT （家の改造）" というタイトルの、チャネル１０６上のテレビ番組がハイライトになっているのを注目されたい。必要ならば、メニューキー（MENUキー）をもう一度押すと、さらに別のサーチを開始することもできる。この別のサーチの結果は図３の画面表示に表示される。図３において、チャネル３０５上のテレビ番組"HOME AND GARDEN（家と庭）" がハイライトになっているのは、そのタイトルが"HOME"という単語を含んでおり、従ってサーチ基準(search criteria) を満たしているためであるということを注目されたい。本発明の装置は、別のワード内にキーワード（サーチ用語）が含まれているような、「サブストリング（部分文字列）のサーチ」を行うことも可能である。例えば、単語HOMEでサブストリング・サーチを行うと、映画のタイトル"HOMEWARD BOUND （家路）" が見つけられることになる。同様に、サーチは、必要に応じて、大小文字を区別するように(case sensitive)することも、大小文字を区別しないように(case insensitive)することも可能である。

図４は、サーチしようとする文字（テキスト）を入力したり、サーチが終了した場合に実行したい命令を入力したりするときに使用すると便利な"GOPHER PROGRAM （ゴッファ・プログラム）" 画面表示２１０を示している。この画面表示２１０からサーチに入ると、"ZULU （ズールー）" （映画のタイトル）と"MICHAEL CAINE（マイケル・カイン）" （ZULUの主演者の一人）というサーチ用語について論理"AND" 機能が実行される。図４には論理"AND" 機能が示されているが、論理"OR"機能と論理"NOT" 機能も想定している。実際には、論理"OR"機能はサーチ用語を２つの異なるサーチとして入力することで実行される。つまり、サーチ用語"ZULU"が単独で入力された場合には、映画"ZULU"とZULU族に関するテレビ番組が選択されることになる。また、サーチ用語 "MICHAEL CAINE"が単独のサーチとして入力されたときには、映画"ZULU"とMichael Caine が主演している他の映画が選択されることになる。

画面表示２１０で注目することは、映画"ZULU"が見つかると、録画（レコーディング）されることである。つまり、サーチ用語と命令を画面表示２１０を通じて入力したあとは、ユーザはなにもしなくても（ＶＣＲにテープが入っていることを確かめること以外）映画"ZULU"はその放映時に確実に録画されることになる。その適切な時間になると、本発明の装置は記録コマンドを自動的にＶＣＲに送信する。別の方法として、ユーザは"DISPLAY A "PROGRAM LOCATED" MESSAGE（「探し出した番組」メッセージの表示）というラベルの付いたボックスにチェックの印を付けることも可能であり、その場合には、番組のショーは録画されないで、むしろ、サーチが無事に完了して、要求されたアイテム（項目）が見つかったことを知らせる通知(reminder)が表示される。

図５は、補助的情報表示３２０を含んでいる番組案内画面３１０を示している。補助的表示３２０の文章は番組説明の中のサーチ用語"ZULU"と"MICHAEL CAINE" を含んでいる。この文章はGOPHER PROGRAMによってサーチされ、そのサーチが無事に完了することになる。なお、"ZULU"と"STANLEY BAKER" をサーチしても、同じようにサーチが成功することになる。ここで注目に価する重要なことは、番組案内の文章だけではなく、テレビ番組に関連する補助的情報もサーチされることである。

上述したように、上述した対話型文または確認文を形成する本発明の装置のコントローラによって使用されるチャネル案内は、衛星テレビジョン通信システムから受信することが可能である。図６はそのような衛星テレビジョン通信システムを示しており、そこでは、衛星４００Ｓはオーディオ（音声）、ビデオ（映像）、またはデータ情報を表す信号を地球基地局の送信装置４００Ｔから受信している。この衛星はこの信号を増幅して、特定の周波数で動作し、一定のバンド幅をもつトランスポンダを経由して、消費者の住宅に置かれた複数の受信装置（テレビ受信機）４００Ｒへ再放送している。この種のシステムは、アップリンク送信部分（地上から衛星へ）、地球を回る衛星の送受信ユニット、およびユーザの住宅に置かれた受信装置を含むダウンリンク部分（衛星から地上へ）から構成されている。

上述したような衛星システムでは、あるテレビ番組を選択するために必要な情報は各受信装置に固定的にプログラムされているのではなく、むしろ、衛星から絶えず各トランスポンダ上にダウンロードされる。テレビ番組選択情報は、マスタ番組案内(Master Program Guide - ＭＰＧ）と呼ばれているデータの集まりから構成されており、この番組案内はユーザに表示されるテレビ番組のタイトル、その開始時間と終了時間、バーチャル・チャネル番号、およびバーチャル・チャネルの割当て情報を、トランスポンダ周波数と、特定のトランスポンダから送信された時分割多重化データストリーム内の位置とに関係づけている。このようなシステムでは、最初のマスタ番組案内が衛星から受信されるまでは、どのチャネルもチューニング（同調）することが不可能である。その理由は、その番組案内を受信するまでは、いずれのトランスポンダの周波数とデータストリーム内の位置（つまり、データ・タイム・スロット）の点から見たときに、どのチャネルも、それがどこに置かれているかが受信装置（ＩＲＤ、つまり、統合受信デコーダ(Integrated Receiver Decoder) ）には文字通り分からないためである。

マスタ番組案内は、テレビ番組の映像および音声データと一緒にすべてのトランスポンダで送信され、例えば、２秒ごとに周期的に繰り返されることが好ましい。マスタ番組案内はいったん受信されると、受信装置のメモリ・ユニットに保存され、例えば、３０分ごとに周期的に更新される。マスタ番組案内を保存しておくと、必要な選択データがいつでも利用できるので、テレビ番組を瞬時に選択することが可能になる。マスタ番組案内がテレビ番組を選択するために使用されたあとで、破棄されるようなことがあると、新しい番組案内を得るまでに少なくとも２秒の遅延が生じ、そのあとでさらに別のテレビ番組の選択が行われることになる。

望みのテレビ番組を搬送するチャネル・トランスポンダにいったんチューニングされると、その番組の音声情報と映像情報を収めているデータ・パケットは、そのデータ・パケットを調べて適切なＳＣＩＤ(Service Component Identifier ：サービス成分識別子）１２ビット・コードを知ることにより、そのトランスポンダから受信したデータストリームから選択することができる。現在受信されているデータ・パケットのＳＣＩＤが、プログラム案内にリストされている望みのテレビ番組のＳＣＩＤに一致すれば、そのデータ・パケットは受信装置の適切なデータ処理セクションに転送される。特定パケットのＳＣＩＤが番組案内にリストされている望みのテレビ番組のＳＣＩＤに一致していなければ、そのデータ・パケットは破棄される。

【実施例】
以下では、上述した本発明を実現するのに適したシステム・ハードウェアについて簡単に説明する。図６に示すように、送信装置４００Ｔは信号源（ソース）４０１（例えばテレビジョン信号源）からのデータ信号を処理し、その処理した信号を衛星４００Ｓに送信する。衛星４００Ｓはこの信号を受信すると、受信アンテナ４００Ａに再放送し、受信アンテナから信号が受信機４００Ｒに入力される。送信装置４００Ｔはエンコーダ４１０Ｔ、変調器（つまり、変調器／順方向誤り訂正器（ＦＥＣ））４２０Ｔ、およびアップリンク・ユニット４３０Ｔを具備している。エンコーダ４１０Ｔは信号源４０１からの信号を、ＭＰＥＧのような、所定の規格に従って圧縮し、符号化する。ＭＰＥＧは、ディジタル記憶媒体上に記憶される動画および関連オーディオの符号化表現に関して国際標準化機構(International Standards Organization - ＩＳＯ）の動画専門家部会(Moving Picture Expert Group) によって開発された国際規格である。エンコーダ４１０Ｔから出力された符号化信号は変調器／順方向誤り訂正器（ＦＥＣ）４２０Ｔに渡され、そこで、信号はエラー訂正データと一緒に符号化され、この符号化信号は４相位相偏移変調(Quaternary Phase Shift Key - ＱＰＳＫ）で変調されて搬送波に乗せられる。

アップリンク・ユニット４３０Ｔはその圧縮・符号化信号を衛星４００Ｓに送信し、その衛星から信号は選択された地域の受信エリアに放送される。衛星４００Ｓからの信号は、いわゆるセットトップ受信機４００Ｒ（つまり、テレビジョン受信機の上に置かれたインタフェース装置）の入力に接続されたアンテナディッシュ (antenna dish：皿状アンテナ）４００Ａによって受信される。受信機４００Ｒは、信号を復調し、エラー訂正データを復号化する復調器（復調器／順方向誤り訂正（ＦＥＣ）デコーダ）４１０Ｒ、ＩＲ（赤外線）リモート・コントロール・コマンドを受信するＩＲ受信装置４１２と、復調器／ＦＥＣユニット４１０Ｒと相互作用しながら動作するマイクロプロセッサ４１５Ｒと、信号の内容、つまり、オーディオ情報であるか、ビデオ情報であるかに応じてユニット４００Ｒ内の該当のデコーダ４２０Ｒへ信号を転送するトランスポート・ユニット４２０Ｒとを装備している。ＮＴＳＣエンコーダ４４０Ｒは復号化信号を、標準ＮＴＳＣ民生ＶＣＲ（ビデオカセットレコーダ）４０２および標準ＮＴＳＣ民生テレビジョン受信機４０３の信号処理回路で使用するのに適したフォーマットに符号化する。マイクロプロセッサ（またはマイクロコントローラやマイクロコンピュータ）４１５Ｒは赤外線 (ＩＲ) 制御信号をリモート・コントロール・ユニット（遠隔制御器、リモコン）４５０Ｒから受信し、制御情報をＩＲリンク（ＩＲ送信装置）４１８Ｒを介してＶＣＲ４０２へ送信する。マイクロプロセッサ４１５Ｒは対話型文または確認文をユーザに対して表示するために必要な文字表示(on-screen display：ＯＳＤ）信号も生成する。また、マイクロプロセッサ４１５Ｒはカーソル・キーのＸ、Ｙ情報を受信し、それを解読して文字表示内のにユーザ選択部分をハイライト（強調）で表示することを制御する。

図７は、文字表示として表示することができるサーチ要求リスト(search request list) を示している。本発明のこの実施例では、３つのアクションが可能である。その第１は、上述したように、ユーザが介入しなくても、番組のショーが次の放送時に録画されるようにプログラムできることである。その第２は、上述したように、望みの番組が見つかったとの通知を画面に文字表示できることである。その第３は、サーチ基準に合致し、近い将来に（例えば次の３時間以内に）放送される種々の番組をリストしたレポートが準備され、表示できることである。図７の例では、ユーザは、Star Trek （スタートレック）のある作品が番組案内に見つかったときは、いつでもその通知（リマインダ：注意）を受けることを要求している。また、ユーザは、映画"The Shining（シャイニング）" が次回に番組案内で見つかったときに収録することも要求している。さらに、ユーザは、"robot（ロボット）" という単語が番組案内に、あるいは番組案内の番組説明の中に見つかったときに、いつでもその通知（リマインダ）を受けることも要求している。これらの命令はユーザが消すまで実行される。残りのサーチ（つまり、現在では、映画、ドラマ）は、どんなドラマが近い将来に（つまり、次の３時間以内に）放送されるかをユーザが知りたいと望んでいることを指示する要求項目である。コントローラ（制御装置）は、次の数時間以内に放送される、すべてのチャネル上のすべてのドラマや映画をリストしたレポートを準備・作成する。これを行ったあと、このエントリ（記入項目）は自動的に削除される。本発明は、さらに、ユーザがサーチ用語を再検討し、編集または削除して、進行中のサーチを変更できるようにすることも想定している。

図８は、サーチ・データを入力するときに利用すると便利な「バーチャル・キーボード(virtual keyboard)」のスクリーン・ディスプレイ（表示画面）を示している。"Watchdog （ウオッチドック）" と呼ばれる４つの"Search Gopher" は、番組案内と補助的情報データストリームの同時サーチを実行するようにプログラム可能になっている。カーソル・キーと選択キーを使用することにより、ユーザはスクリーンの左側のwachdog ボタンの１つを「押して」、それを選択することができる。そのあとで、ユーザはアルファベット・キーを使用して、ユーザのサーチ要求を入力することができる（図８には明示に示されていないが、英数字キーも想定している）。サーチ要求の文章（テキスト）に満足すれば、ユーザは、当該watchdogのサーチ処理のためにSaveキー（セーブキー）を押してサーチ用語をセーブしておくことができる。ユーザは間違えたときは、Clear キー（クリアキー）でその間違いを削除することができる。

図９のステップ７００でGopherプログラムに入る。ステップ７０５で、上記サーチ用語が検索される。ステップ７１０で、番組案内データが取得される。ステップ７１５で、一致する番組が存在するか否かを調べるために比較が行われる。一致する番組が存在しなければ、プログラムはステップ７２０で終了する。一致する番組が存在すれば、ユーザが入力した命令が検索される。録画命令が入力されたか否かを確かめるチェックがステップ７２５で行われ、録画命令が入力されていれば、ルーチンはステップ７３０へ進み、そこで録画コマンドが即時に、あるいは将来の該当時刻にＶＣＲへ送られる。そのあと、ルーチンはステップ７３５で終了する。しかし、録画命令が入力されていなかったときには、ルーチンはステップ７４０へ進み、そこで通知（リマインダ）メッセージが成生され、望みの番組（ショー）が放送される前の「直前の通知(last minute reminder)」として即時に表示されるか、あるいは将来の該当時刻に（またはその両方で）表示される。そのあと、ルーチンはステップ７３５で終了する。

以上、衛星テレビジョン・システムを例にして本発明を説明してきたが、本発明は、ディジタルであるか、アナログであるかに関係なく、地上ベースのテレビジョン放送システムにも等しく適用可能である。

以上説明したように、本発明によれば、所望の番組を番組リストから自動的に探し出し、通知を行うことができる効果が得られる。

Claims (2)

  1. 番組の選択のために番組の案内情報をサーチする方法において、
    表示する番組案内リスト情報を生成し、
    一緒に連係された２つの別々のサーチ条件からなる連結サーチ条件を生成して保存し、
    前記連結サーチ条件に応じて、前記連結サーチ条件を満たす第１の番組を検出するために、前記番組案内リスト情報に関する補助テキストのサーチを開始し、
    ユーザが指示した入力に応答して、前記連結サーチ条件を満たす第２の番組を検出するために、前記補助テキストのサーチを継続し、
    前記連結サーチ条件を満たす前記第１の番組と前記第２の番組を、前記番組案内リスト情報を用いて逐次強調表示する
    ことを含むことを特徴とする方法。
  2. 前記第１の番組と前記第２の番組は記憶装置に記録されることを特徴とする請求項１に記載の方法。
