プリンタ等の画像形成装置においては、用紙が搬送途中で斜めに搬送される斜行(スキュー)が生じることがよくある。
従来、用紙を搬送方向に真っ直ぐにするために、予め斜めに搬送して基準部材に突き当てて補正する方法や、特開2000−16640号公報に開示されているような幅寄せ機構で補正する方法が知られている。

しかし、斜め搬送の場合には長い搬送路が必要である。また、幅寄せ機構の場合には、図1に示すように、用紙50の搬送中に幅寄せ、つまり左右のサイドフェンス51・52を摺動させてその間隔を狭くして行くと、用紙50の側縁が、例えばサイドフェンス52の下流側の角部で押されてダメージ53が発生することがあるので、用紙50の搬送を一旦停止してから、幅寄せする必要がある。そうすると、プリント時間が長くなってしまう。
