本発明でいうフローラル調の香りとはバラ、ジャスミン、ライラック、ユリ,モモ、スズラン、ラン、カーネーションをはじめとする各種花様香気を意味し、新しいバラ様香料とは、現在存在するバラの香気さらにはイメージ上バラの花を想起させる香料をも意味している。また、鎮静効果を有するフローラル調の香りとは、リラックス感を与えストレスを軽減し得る香りを意味する。

本発明の香料組成物に用いられる一般式(1)の化合物の一つである4−エチルアニソールは、天然精油中の成分として、ゼニゴケ(ファイトケミストリー、第44巻、1261ページ、1997(Phytochemistry,(44),1261(1997))、韓国醤油(Korean soy sauce)(ジャーナル・オブ・マイクロバイオロジー・アンド・バイオテクノロジー、第6巻、278ページ、1996年(J.Microbiol.Biotechnol.,(6)、278(1996)に存在することの報告があり、4−イソプロピルアニソールは、甘草(Glycyrrhiza glabra)(薬学雑誌、第61巻、1119ページ、1987年)、日本農芸化学会誌、第61巻1119ページ、1987年)、ウラボシ科植物(Polypodiaceae)(油化学、第42巻、44ページ、1993年)にその存在の報告があるが、香りについての記載は全く無く、更に、4−エチルアニソールと4−イソプロピルアニソールは、ともに香料原料として使用されたこともない。

以下に、実施例を挙げて本発明を記述するが、本発明はこれらに限定されるものではない。尚、以下の処方中の数字は質量部を示す。
4−エチルアニソールの調製
16.5gの水酸化ナトリウムを250mlの1,4−ジオキサン:水(1:1)に溶解した溶液に、攪拌下室温で50mlの1,4−ジオキサンに溶解した12.5gの4−メチルフェノール溶液を加えた。この混合溶液に19gのジメチル硫酸を滴下し、徐々に温度を上げて2時間還流させた。250mlの水を加えた後、更に2時間還流させ過剰のジメチル硫酸を分解した。冷却後、100mlのトルエンを反応液中に加え抽出し、トルエン層を分液し中性になるまで食塩水で洗浄した。トルエンを濃縮回収すると36gの淡黄色油状物質が得られる。これを減圧下に蒸留して20gの無色油状物質が得られた(沸点120〜123℃/143mmHg)。得られた油状物質のGC−MSスペクトルを測定し親ピークが136に観察されるとともに、測定したNMRのスペクトルデータも油状物質が4−エチルアニソールであることを示した。
