シートに着座した乗員の頭部を含めた上半身を保護可能に膨張するエアバッグを備えて構成される乗員保護装置であって、
前記エアバッグが、
着座した乗員の頭部の上方付近に配設された収納部位から下方側へ突出する構成として、膨張完了形状を、
乗員の頭部から胸部の前方側を覆って、前方移動する乗員を受止可能な拘束面を、後面に設けた前側膨張部と、
該前側膨張部の左右両側から後上方に延び、前記収納部位に連結されて支持される側面膨張部と、
を備える形状とするとともに、
左右の前記側面膨張部が、
記シートの背もたれ部における乗員の左右の肩部後方の上面側に当接する支持面と、
前記支持面の前部から下方に延び、乗員の肩部を受止可能な肩拘束部と、
を配設させて構成されていることを特徴とする乗員保護装置。
