Description

For example, electronic devices that support learning, such as electronic dictionaries, are equipped with content that tests various subjects such as English and kanji, and learners (users) can study by answering test questions and having their answers judged as correct or incorrect.

Conventional learning support devices measure the time it takes to answer a question, grasp the learner's level of understanding and proficiency, and provide efficient learning support based on this (see, for example, Patent Document 1).

The electronic device can be configured not only as an electronic dictionary 10 dedicated to learning support, as described below, but also as a tablet-type PDA (personal digital assistant), PC (personal computer), mobile phone, e-book, portable game machine, server on a communication network, etc., equipped with learning support functions.

The electronic dictionary 10 is configured with a foldable case in which the main body case 11 and the cover case 12 can be opened/closed via a hinge section 13. When the foldable case is opened, the surface of the main body case 11 is provided with a key input section 14 including a [Home] key 14a, function designation keys 14b, character input keys 14c, a [Decision] key 14d, a [Back] key 14e, cursor keys 14f, and a [Shift] key 14g, an audio output section (including a speaker) 15, and an audio input section (including a microphone) 16.

A touch panel display unit 17 (input unit) is provided on the surface of the cover case 12. At the left end of the touch panel display unit 17, there is provided a touch key area 17A on which keys and function notations (such as [highlighter], [sticky note], and [memory card]) are printed for pressing some of the keys in the key input unit 14 or specifying some of the functions of the electronic dictionary 10 by touch operation. For example, the [Highlighter] key BM is a key that specifies the function of adding a highlighter of any color to the text displayed on the touch panel display unit 17.

The [Home] key 14 of the key input unit 14 is a key for displaying a home screen on the display unit 17. Although not specifically shown, the home screen displays a number of icons that are registered according to the initial settings of the electronic dictionary 10 or user operations. Each icon is a figure or symbol for activating a function corresponding to the notation of the icon. For example, it includes an application icon that directly activates a function (application) that uses dictionary content or learning content, and a group icon that displays a list screen of icons of multiple functions that belong to one category.

The touch panel display unit 17 of the electronic dictionary 10 shown in FIG. 1 is an example that displays a question screen G2 for a multiple-choice English fill-in-the-blank question from a problem set included in the study content. The electronic circuit of the electronic dictionary 10 includes a control unit (CPU: central processing unit) 21. The control unit 21 controls the operation of each part of the circuit according to a control program prestored in a memory unit 22 such as a flash ROM.

The control program may be read by the recording medium reading unit 24 from an external recording medium 23 such as a memory card and stored in the memory unit 22, or may be downloaded from a web server (here, a program server) 30 on the communication network N via the communication unit 25 and stored in the memory unit 22.

The storage unit 22 stores control programs including a system program that controls the overall operation of the electronic dictionary 10, a communication program for connecting to external electronic devices via the communication unit 25, and a search processing program 22a and a learning processing program 22b. The storage unit 22 also stores data for executing various functions by the electronic dictionary 10, including learning content data 22c, dictionary data 22d, and test answer additional information data 22e.

The search processing program 22a includes a program for searching for and displaying a user-requested heading word and its corresponding translation, meaning, usage example, explanation, and other explanatory information based on various dictionary contents (English-Japanese/Japanese-English/Japanese language/...) stored as dictionary data 22d.

The learning processing program 22b selectively controls the key input unit 14, the voice output unit 15, the voice input unit 16, and the touch panel display unit 17 as necessary based on various learning contents (vocabulary learning contents 22c1/grammar learning contents 22c2/pronunciation learning contents 22c3/English level test contents 22c4/...) stored as learning content data 22c, and includes a program for allowing the user to learn words, grammar, pronunciation, learn by testing, etc.

When a user studies based on a collection of questions included in the learning content data 22c, such as the English level test content 22c4, the test answer additional information data 22e stores, for each question, information about the process of the answer that the user obtained in the process of solving the questions as additional information. The additional information is classified into types such as, for example, user's notes, a check in a checkbox indicating that the answer was answered by guesswork, a marker added to the question text, a narrowed-down answer indicating that the answer was answered by narrowing down the multiple-choice answers, a weighted answer indicating that the answer was answered by weighting multiple answers, writing in the question text, an answer time exceeding a standard answer time (set for each question), an immediate answer indicating that the answer was answered much faster than the standard answer time, an answer change indicating that the answer was changed one or more times, an answer skip, and an operation amount indicating a predetermined amount or more of screen operation such as the number of times the question was redisplayed or the amount of scrolling.

In the electronic dictionary 10 configured in this manner, the control unit 21 controls the operation of each part of the circuit according to the commands of the control program stored in the memory unit 22, and the software and hardware work together to realize various functions including a learning function and an information addition function, as described in the operation description below.

If there is no additional information to accompany the answer to the question (step S3 (No)), the additional information is not temporarily stored (step S4).

The control unit 21 determines whether the question corresponding to the question screen G2 for which it recognized in step S2 that an answer number has been specified is the last question in the set of questions being tested (step S5). If it is determined that there is additional information (here, memo data) associated with the specified question (6) (step S10 (Yes)), the control unit 21 causes the display unit 17 to display a question explanation confirmation screen G5 corresponding to the specified question (6), as shown in FIG. 4F (step S12).

The question explanation confirmation screen G5 has a [Question text] button T1, an [Explanation] button T2, and an [English text and translation] button T3. When the [Question text] button T1 is selected, the control unit 21 causes the display unit 17 to display the question text of the selected question (6), including the additional information (here, note data) temporarily stored as test answer additional information data 22e, as shown in FIG. 4F.

Figure 11 shows the question explanation confirmation screen G5 after determining whether the answer was correct or incorrect according to the test process of the electronic dictionary 10 (if the answer time has exceeded).

For example, if additional information indicating that the answer time exceeded is associated with question (13) in question set 1 and temporarily stored as test answer additional information data 22e, as shown in FIG. 11, the question explanation confirmation screen G5 is displayed on the display unit 17 including the data on the answer time exceeded situation ME1, "[Verification required] It took more than 4 minutes to answer this question," stored as the test answer additional information data 22e (step S12).

Figure 12 shows the question explanation confirmation screen G5 (if the answer has been changed) after the answer has been determined to be correct according to the test process of the electronic dictionary 10.

For example, if additional information with a changed answer is associated with question (13) in question set 1 and temporarily stored as additional test answer information data 22e, as shown in FIG. 12, the question explanation confirmation screen G5 is displayed on the display unit 17 including the answer change status data ME2 "[Must confirm] The answer has been changed once for this question" stored as additional test answer information data 22e (step S12).

When the [Explanation] button T2 is selected on the question explanation confirmation screen G5 (see FIG. 4F), the control unit 21 causes the explanation of the specified question (6) to be displayed on the screen G5 (not shown). Also, when the [English and Translation] button T3 is selected, the control unit 21 causes the English and translation of the specified question (6) to be displayed on the screen G5 (not shown).

This allows the user to easily check the explanation for the question they specified on the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen G4 (see Figure 4D), including any associated additional information.

On the other hand, if there is no additional information associated with the specified question on the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen G4 (see FIG. 4D) (step S10 (No)), the control unit 21 causes the display unit 17 to display a question explanation confirmation screen G5 without additional information corresponding to the specified question, and displays the question text, explanation, English text and translation in response to the selection of the [Question text] button T1, the [Explanation] button T2 and the [English text and translation] button T3 (step S11).

On the question explanation confirmation screen G5 with additional information (see FIG. 4F) (step S12), when the "Save this memo" button RE is selected and an instruction is given to save the additional information (here, the memo data) temporarily stored as test answer additional information data 22e associated with the currently displayed question (here, question (6)) (step S13 (Yes)), the control unit 21 stores (confirms storage of) the temporarily stored additional information in the memory unit 22 as test answer additional information data 22e associated with the same question (6) (step S14).

Then, as shown in FIG. 4D, the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen G4 is displayed again on the display unit 17 (step S8).

This allows the user to check the additional information temporarily stored in association with questions marked with a [Verify] mark K on the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen G4 on the question explanation confirmation screen G5 again and decide whether or not to save it, and to save (store) additional information that may be useful for future relearning, for example, as test answer additional information data 22e.

When, for example, the [Back] key 14e of the key input unit 14 is operated on the question explanation confirmation screen G5 (step S11 or S12), the control unit 21 causes the display unit 17 to display the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen G4 again, as shown in FIG. 4D (step S8).

In addition, in the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen (example 1) G4 shown in FIG. 4D, a [Verification required] mark K is added to the question items for which additional information (test answer additional information data 22e) is stored, regardless of the type of additional information. In this case, the user can easily check which questions have additional information, but cannot check what type of additional information that is.

In response to this, as shown in the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen (example 2) G4a in Figure 4E, confirmation marks that illustrate the type of additional information, such as a confirmation mark KM for when a note is present and a confirmation mark KT for when the answering time has exceeded, may be added and displayed, allowing the user to see at a glance which questions have additional information and what type of additional information there is.

In this case, the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen (example 2) G4a has a filter bar B3a that allows the question numbers of the correct/incorrect results to be displayed in a list on screen G4a to be narrowed down by type of additional information, such as questions for which notes were left or questions that took a long time, in addition to correct answers, incorrect answers, and all questions.

When the user follows this series of test processes (Figure 3), and then re-studies an arbitrary set of questions, the "Display list of questions to be checked" button m2 is selected on the menu screen G1 of the English Level 2 question set that the user has already studied, which is displayed on the display unit 17, as shown in Figure 5, for example.

Then, the control unit 21 causes the display unit 17 to display a question answer correct/incorrect result list screen G4 in which a [Needs confirmation] mark K is added to the question number of the question with additional information based on the test answer additional information data 22e associated with the question in the English Level 2 workbook that the user has studied, as shown in FIG. 4D for example (step S8).

On the question answer result list screen G4, the user can touch and specify the question number item with the "Verify" mark K to display the question explanation confirmation screen G5 (see, for example, Figures 4F, 11, and 12) containing additional information associated with the question on the display unit 17, as described above (steps S9 to S12).

This allows the user to easily learn from the additional information about the problem about the process of how they arrived at the answer to the problem when they were studying it the previous time, such as whether they answered hesitantly, thought long and hard about the answer, answered by guesswork, or answered hesitantly. Therefore, the user can easily perform self-analysis to determine whether they have completely memorized a problem even if the answer was judged to be "○" when studying the previous problem set, and can efficiently identify problems that they should re-study.

The test answer additional information data 22e that is saved (stored) in association with the questions in the problem set that the user has studied may be configured to be updated, for example, each time the user selects the [Test] button m1 on the menu screen G1 (see FIG. 4A) and executes the test process (FIG. 3) for the problem set again.

In addition, in response to a user operation on the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen G4 (see FIG. 4D), the test answer additional information data 22e associated with all questions in the question collection may be erased all at once, or any question may be selected and erased individually.

According to the learning function and information addition function of the electronic dictionary 10 of the embodiment, for example, on the question screen G2 which prompts the user to input information as an answer to a question (question information) in a question collection, when the user answers (inputs input information), the user consciously adds information about the process of answering the question by entering a note, checking the answer check box CH by guesswork, or adding a marker ma to the question text, and an answer number is specified, and the added information (note, check box, marker, etc.) is saved (stored) in association with the question number of the question as test answer additional information data 22e.

In addition, when the user answers a question, the user may find that the answer time has exceeded the reference time set for each question, the answer number has been changed, or an answer has been skipped. When a question item marked with a [Confirmation Required] mark K is specified by the user, a question explanation confirmation screen G5 is displayed that selectively displays the question text, explanation, or English text and translation of the specified question, including additional information (such as notes, check boxes, and highlighter information) as test answer additional information data 22e associated with the question (such as information on answer time exceeded, answer change, and answer skip).

As a result, the user can easily check the question number of the question to which additional information such as memo data is associated, regardless of whether the answer is correct or incorrect, by using the [Verify] mark K on the question answer list screen G3 or the question answer correct/incorrect result list screen (example 1) G4. The user can also easily know that there was some process that led to the answer when answering the question, such as answering hesitation, answering after thinking, answering based on intuition, or answering hesitation.

Therefore, the user can easily perform self-analysis to determine, for example, whether or not they have completely memorized a question that was judged to be correct "○" when studying the previous problem set, and can efficiently identify questions that need to be re-studyed.

Therefore, according to the electronic dictionary 10 of the embodiment, it becomes possible to effectively re-study the question based on the information on the process leading to the answer to the question.

The methods of each process performed by the electronic dictionary 10 described in the above embodiments, i.e., each method such as the test process shown in the flowchart of FIG. 3, can be distributed as a program that can be executed by a computer and stored on a medium of an external recording device such as a memory card (ROM card, RAM card, etc.), a magnetic disk (floppy (registered trademark) disk, hard disk, etc.), an optical disk (CD-ROM, DVD, etc.), or a semiconductor memory. The control unit (CPU) of the electronic device then loads the program stored on the medium of the external recording device into the storage device, and the operation is controlled by the loaded program, thereby realizing the learning function and information addition function described in the embodiments and enabling the same processing using the above-mentioned methods.

In addition, the program data for implementing each method can be transmitted over a communication network (N) in the form of program code, and the program data can be imported into an electronic device from a computer device (program server) connected to this communication network (N) and stored in a storage device, thereby implementing the aforementioned learning function and information addition function.

The electronic device of the embodiment has been described as being realized by an electronic dictionary 10, but it can of course also be realized by a web server 30 on a communication network N. In this case, for example, by connecting to the web server 30 using a communication terminal such as a tablet terminal operated by a user, the web server 30 executes the same functions as those of the electronic dictionary 10 of the embodiment.
