Description
This invention relates to a linking mechanism that links cylindrical bodies in an extendable cover whose height can be adjusted to match the height of the items being stored, and to an extendable cover equipped with this linking mechanism.
When transporting or delivering goods, crates, food containers, bread boxes, and other cases containing the goods are stacked and placed on a dolly or other vehicle, and the goods are transported in bulk. In such cases, the stacked cases are covered with a cover to protect them from dust and direct sunlight, or to keep the goods warm or cold. Since stacked cases are delivered from the top down at the delivery destination, causing their height to change, an expandable cover that can adjust the height has been proposed (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
The telescopic cover of Patent Document 1 has a nested structure in which two cylindrical bodies of the same height are stored inside a larger one, and can be expanded or contracted between a contracted state in which the inner cylindrical body is stored inside the outer cylindrical body, and an expanded state in which the outer cylindrical body is shifted upward relative to the inner cylindrical body. Adjacent outer and inner cylindrical bodies are connected by a flexible connecting sheet that is half the height of the cylindrical bodies. In the contracted state in which the outer and inner cylindrical bodies are at the same height, the connecting sheet's base end is positioned higher than the tip end, forming a nearly vertically planar surface. In the expanded state in which the outer cylindrical body is shifted upward relative to the inner cylindrical body, the connecting sheet's tip end is positioned higher than the base end, forming a nearly vertically planar surface. When the outer cylindrical body of Patent Document 1 is lifted, the inner cylindrical body is also lifted due to the pull of the connecting sheet, and multiple cylindrical bodies are lifted sequentially.
In the stretchable cover of Patent Document 1, the flexible connecting sheet bends midway in the narrow space between the inner and outer cylindrical bodies as the inner and outer cylindrical bodies rise and fall relative to each other, swapping the distal end connected to the outer cylindrical body with the proximal end connected to the inner cylindrical body. As a result, the flexible connecting sheet may bend in multiple places, resulting in poor folding or the connecting sheet getting caught on the inner and outer cylindrical bodies, preventing the multiple cylindrical bodies from smoothly expanding and contracting.
The present invention was proposed in light of the above-mentioned problems associated with the prior art, and aims to provide an extendable cover and a linking mechanism for the extendable cover that allows for smooth extension and retraction.

According to the linking mechanism of the extendable cover of the present invention, the plurality of cylindrical bodies can be linked together so as to smoothly extend and retract.
The extendable cover according to the present invention allows the multiple cylindrical bodies to smoothly extend and retract using the linking mechanism.
Next, the linking mechanism for the telescopic cover and the telescopic cover according to the present invention will be described below using a preferred embodiment with reference to the accompanying drawings.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the telescopic cover 10 according to the embodiment includes multiple cylindrical bodies 12 in a nested relationship, allowing smaller cylindrical bodies 12 to be stored inside larger cylindrical bodies 12; in this embodiment, it is configured with four cylindrical bodies 12. The telescopic cover 10 is expandable between a contracted state (see Figures 1 and 5) in which the smaller cylindrical bodies 12 are stored inside the larger cylindrical body 12, and an expanded state (see Figures 2 and 6) in which the contracted state displaces the adjacent cylindrical bodies 12, 12 relative to each other in the vertical direction, with the adjacent cylindrical bodies 12, 12 connected to each other by a linking mechanism 14. The telescopic cover 10 has an internal storage space capable of storing cases C (see Figure 10), such as crates, food containers, and bread boxes. The vertical dimension of the storage space can be changed to match the height of the stacked cases C by extending or retracting the multiple cylindrical bodies 12.
As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the cylindrical body 12 of the embodiment is a rectangular tube with four sides (front, back, left, and right) formed by rectangular walls and having a storage space that penetrates vertically. Furthermore, each wall of the cylindrical body 12 extends vertically, and is formed so that the opening area is the same from top to bottom. The inner and outer surfaces of the wall are made of sheet material, such as aluminum-coated plastic sheet, that has the required functionality, such as flexibility, heat insulation, and light blocking properties. A core material, such as a reinforcing plate such as plastic corrugated cardboard or an insulating plate such as polyurethane foam, is enclosed between the two overlapping sheets. The cylindrical body 12 is constructed by connecting the walls on each side by sewing the sheet material together directly or indirectly. In the embodiment, the cylindrical body 12 (walls) has enough rigidity to stand on its own. The multiple cylindrical bodies 12 have similar shapes, with approximately the same height and different opening areas.
When the telescopic cover 10 is in the retracted state, the innermost cylindrical body 12 has a storage space large enough to house the case C. The cylindrical bodies 12 gradually increase in size from this cylindrical body 12 outward. In the following description, the innermost cylindrical body 12 in the retracted state will be referred to as the first cylindrical body 12A, the cylindrical body 12 positioned outside the first cylindrical body 12A as the second cylindrical body 12B, the cylindrical body 12 positioned outside the second cylindrical body 12B as the third cylindrical body 12C, and the outermost cylindrical body 12 outside the third cylindrical body 12C as the fourth cylindrical body 12D. Note that "inside and outside" in relation to the cylindrical bodies 12 generally refers to the positional relationship of the telescopic cover 10 when it is in the retracted state. For ease of explanation, the front, back, left, and right directions of the telescopic cover 10 will follow the orientation shown in Figure 1.
As shown in Figures 1 and 5, the extendable cover 10 has a lid portion 16 that is connected to the upper edge of the rear side of the fourth cylindrical body 12D. The lid portion 16 is foldable at the connection with the fourth cylindrical body 12D, allowing the top opening to be opened and closed. The lid portion 16 has a hook-and-loop fastener 18 on the front side opposite the connection with the fourth cylindrical body 12D, and the hook-and-loop fastener 18 on the lid portion 16 is detachable from a hook-and-loop fastener 20 provided on the outer surface of the upper edge of the front side of the fourth cylindrical body 12D. The extendable cover 10 is also detachable between the left and right horizontal sides of the lid portion 16 and the upper edges of the left and right horizontal sides of the fourth cylindrical body 12D using fastener strips 22. The extendable cover 10 has a positioning portion 24 whose base end is connected to the upper edge of the rear side of the fourth cylindrical body 12D. The positioning portion 24 is a flexible belt- or string-like member and has a hook-and-loop fastener 26 at its tip that can be attached to and detached from the hook-and-loop fastener 20 attached to the outer surface of the upper edge of the front side of the fourth cylindrical body 12D. The positioning portion 24, which joins the hook-and-loop fasteners 18, 20, and 26 across the top opening, and/or the lid 16 that closes the top opening, are placed on the top end of the case C stored in the storage space, thereby determining the vertical position of the fourth cylindrical body 12D and maintaining the extended state of the cylindrical body 12D. Reference numeral 28, attached to the outer lateral surface of the fourth cylindrical body 12D shown in Figure 1, is a handle used to extend or retract the extendable cover 10.
As shown in Figures 5, 6, and 9, the linking mechanism 14 is provided between the inner cylindrical body 12 and the outer cylindrical body 12. It is preferable that the extendable cover 10 has a linking mechanism 14 on at least one pair of side surfaces that face each other across the inner storage space of the cylindrical body 12; in this embodiment, a linking mechanism 14 is provided on each of the front and rear pair of side surfaces and the left and right pair of side surfaces that face each other across the storage space (see Figures 2 to 4). In this embodiment, the extendable cover 10 has the linking mechanisms 14 arranged symmetrically across the storage space of the cylindrical body 12, and the linking mechanisms 14 provided corresponding to each of the four side surfaces of the cylindrical body 12 all have the same structure.
As shown in Figures 5 to 9, the linking mechanism 14 includes a linking body 30 provided on the surface of one of the adjacent cylindrical bodies 12 facing the other cylindrical body 12, and a retaining body 32 provided on the surface of the other of the adjacent cylindrical bodies 12 facing the first cylindrical body 12. In this embodiment, the linking body 30 is provided on the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body (one cylindrical body) 12, and the retaining body 32 is provided on the outer surface of the inner cylindrical body (the other cylindrical body) 12, with the linking body 30 and the retaining body 32 being distributed between the two adjacent cylindrical bodies 12, 12.
As shown in Figure 7, the linking body 30 is disposed in the widthwise center of the wall of the cylindrical body 12. One end of the linking body 30 is fixed to either the upper or lower edge of the outer cylindrical body 12; in this embodiment, the upper end (one end) of the linking body 30 is fixed to the inner surface of the upper edge of the cylindrical body 12 by sewing or the like to form the fixed end 30a (see Figure 5). The other end of the linking body 30 opposite the fixed end 30a (referred to as the locking end 30b when specifically distinguished) is fixed to the lower edge of the outer cylindrical body 12 opposite the upper edge to which the fixed end 30a is fixed (see Figure 6). Thus, in this embodiment, the upper fixed end 30a and the lower locking end 30b of the linking body 30 are fixed to the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body 12. The connecting body 30 is provided so as to extend along the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body 12, over the entire or nearly entire top and bottom of the inner surface (see FIGS. 3 and 4). The connecting body 30 is not fixed to the outer cylindrical body 12 except at its upper and lower ends, and the intermediate portion between the upper and lower ends is in a free state in which it can come into contact with or separate from the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body 12. The connecting body 30 displaces up and down in accordance with the vertical displacement of the cylindrical body 12 to which its fixed end 30a is fixed, and in its contracted state is stored between the adjacent cylindrical bodies 12, 12 on the inside and outside (see FIGS. 5 and 7(a)), and in its extended state most of it except for the lower part appears in the storage space (see FIGS. 6 and 7(c)). Furthermore, when the linking body 30 rises and falls in response to vertical displacement of the outer cylindrical body 12, the vertical relationship between the fixed end 30a and the engaging end 30b does not change, and the linking body 30 rises and falls integrally with the cylindrical body 12 while maintaining its orientation along the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body 12.
As shown in Figures 7 and 8, the linking body 30 includes a guide portion 34 that extends vertically from the fixed end 30a along the inner surface of the tubular body 12 to which the fixed end 30a is fixed and is held by a holder 32 so that displacement in a direction intersecting the vertical direction is restricted. A locking portion 36 is provided at the locking end 30b of the linking body 30, connecting with the guide portion 34. The linking body 30 is a plate-like body in which the guide portion 34 and the locking portion 36 are integrally formed, and is disposed between adjacent inner and outer tubular bodies 12, 12 with its thickness oriented inward and outward (see Figure 9). The guide portion 34 is plate-like and formed with a width narrower than the width of the wall to which the linking body 30 is fixed, and its edge extending in the height direction of the tubular body 12 is vertical. The locking portion 36 is formed with a width narrower than the width of the wall to which the linking body 30 is fixed but wider than the guide portion 34, and extends further in the width direction than the guide portion 34. The locking portion 36 has portions extending in opposite directions in the width direction, formed symmetrically across the guide portion 34. The lower edge of the locking portion 36 opposite the guide portion 34 is fixed to the tubular body 12 by sewing or the like, and the upper edge connected to the guide portion 34 is free to come into contact with or separate from the inner surface of the tubular body 12 to which the fixed end 30a is fixed. The linking body 30 of this embodiment has a shape resembling an upside-down "T" formed by the guide portion 34 and the locking portion 36 (see Figures 7 and 8).
The connecting member 30 can be formed from a solid or foamed synthetic resin such as polyethylene, and it is preferable to use a foam with a low expansion ratio, as this allows for lighter weight. The connecting member 30 is preferably flexible enough to bend when an external force is applied, yet return to its original shape when no external force is applied, and has the resilience to maintain its shape and stand upright along the wall. A low-foam polyethylene sheet is suitable due to its light weight and resilience.
As shown in Figure 5, the retaining body 32 is provided on the same edge of the inner cylindrical body 12 as the fixed end 30a of the linking body 30. In this embodiment, since the fixed end 30a of the linking body 30 is set at the upper edge of the cylindrical body 12, the retaining body 32 is correspondingly provided on the upper edge of the inner cylindrical body 12. The retaining body 32 is located below the fixed end 30a of the linking body 30 at the upper edge of the inner cylindrical body 12. A guide portion 34 of the linking body 30 is arranged vertically between the retaining body 32 and the outer surface of the inner cylindrical body 12, and a locking portion 36 is arranged below the retaining body 32 (see Figures 7 and 8). The retaining body 32 is configured to allow the guide portion 34 to slide up and down in accordance with the relative up and down displacement of the adjacent inner and outer cylindrical bodies 12, 12, while being hooked onto the locking portion 36 to restrict upward displacement of the locking portion 36 beyond the retaining body 32. Specifically, the retaining body 32 is fixed to the outer surface of the upper edge of the inner cylindrical body 12 and is formed so as to define an insertion space between the retaining body 32 and the outer surface of the inner cylindrical body 12 through which the guide portion 34 can pass (see FIG. 9). The retaining body 32 is formed in a cylindrical shape such that both widthwise edges are fixed to the inner cylindrical body 12 by sewing or the like, and an intermediate portion between the widthwise ends is in a free state so as to be able to come into contact with and separate from the outer surface of the inner cylindrical body 12. The guide portion 34 of the linking body 30 is inserted vertically through the insertion space defined by the holding body 32, with the fixed end 30a of the linking body 30 positioned above the holding body 32 and the locking portion 36 (locking end 30b) of the linking body 30 positioned below the holding body 32. The holding body 32 is formed so that the width of the insertion space is greater than the width of the guide portion 34 but smaller than the width of the locking portion 36, so that although the guide portion 34 passes vertically, the locking portion 36 gets caught on itself and cannot pass through.
The holder 32 can be formed from a solid or foamed synthetic resin such as polyethylene, and it is preferable to use a foam with a low expansion ratio, as this allows for lighter weight. The holder 32 is preferably flexible enough to bend when an external force is applied, yet return to its original shape when no external force is applied, and has the "stiffness" to retain its shape and hold the connecting member 30. A low-foam polyethylene sheet is suitable because it is lightweight and has "stiffness."
In the linking mechanism 14 of the embodiment, the locking end 30b at the lower end of the linking body 30 is fixed to the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body 12, so the fixed portion of the locking end 30b catches on the retaining body 32, restricting upward displacement of the fixed portion beyond the retaining body 32. Therefore, in the linking body 30, not only the portion of the locking portion 36 that extends widthwise beyond the guide portion 34, but also the portion fixed to the cylindrical body 12 can function as the locking portion 36. Furthermore, because the fixed end 30a at the upper end of the linking body 30 is fixed to the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body 12, the fixed end 30a catches on the retaining body 32, restricting downward displacement of the fixed end 30a beyond the retaining body 32.
As shown in Figures 1 and 5, when the telescopic cover 10 is in a contracted state with the first through fourth cylindrical bodies 12A, 12B, 12C, and 12D in contact with the ground, the third through first cylindrical bodies 12C, 12B, and 12A are housed inside the fourth cylindrical body 12D, resulting in the lowest overall height. When the telescopic cover 10 is in the contracted state, the upper part of the guide portion 34 of the linking body 30 of the linking mechanism 14 passes through the holding body 32 (see Figures 7(a) and 8(a)). The fixed end 30a of the linking body 30 of the telescopic cover 10 is hooked onto the holding body 32, restricting downward displacement of the outer cylindrical body 12 relative to the inner cylindrical body 12, preventing the cylindrical bodies 12 from falling downward and becoming separated.
When adjusting the height of the telescopic cover 10, when the outermost fourth cylindrical body 12D is lifted, the guide portion 34 is guided by the retaining body 32 provided on the adjacent third cylindrical body 12C on the inside, and the linking body 30 provided on the fourth cylindrical body 12D also rises (see Figure 8(b)). Furthermore, when the fourth cylindrical body 12D is lifted, the locking portion 36 of the linking body 30 provided on the fourth cylindrical body 12D catches on the retaining body 32 provided on the third cylindrical body 12C, and the engagement between the retaining body 32 and the locking portion 36 restricts the relative upward displacement of the fourth cylindrical body 12D with respect to the third cylindrical body 12C (see Figure 8(c)). Furthermore, when the fourth cylindrical body 12D is lifted, the third cylindrical body 12C is lifted in conjunction with the fourth cylindrical body 12D, supported by the linking mechanism 14 between the fourth cylindrical body 12D and the third cylindrical body 12C, and the linking body 30 provided on the third cylindrical body 12C also rises, with the guide portion 34 guided by the holding body 32 provided on the adjacent second cylindrical body 12B. Furthermore, when the fourth cylindrical body 12D is lifted, the locking portion 36 of the linking body 30 provided on the third cylindrical body 12C gets caught on the holding body 32 provided on the second cylindrical body 12B, and the relative upward displacement of the third cylindrical body 12C with respect to the second cylindrical body 12B is restricted by the locking between the holding body 32 and the locking portion 36. Furthermore, when the fourth cylindrical body 12D is lifted, the second cylindrical body 12B and the third cylindrical body 12C are lifted in conjunction with the fourth cylindrical body 12D, supported by the linking mechanism 14 between the fourth cylindrical body 12D and the third cylindrical body 12C and the linking mechanism 14 between the third cylindrical body 12C and the second cylindrical body 12B. The linking body 30 provided on the second cylindrical body 12B also rises, with the guide portion 34 guided by the holding body 32 provided on the first cylindrical body 12A adjacent to it on the inside (see FIG. 7(b)). When the fourth cylindrical body 12D is further lifted, the locking portion 36 of the linking body 30 provided on the second cylindrical body 12B catches on the holding body 32 provided on the first cylindrical body 12A (see FIG. 7(c)), and at this time the extendable cover 10 extends to its highest position (see FIGS. 2 and 6). In this way, the telescopic cover 10 uses a linking mechanism 14 that links the adjacent inner and outer cylindrical bodies 12, 12, so that when the outer cylindrical body 12 is lifted, the inner cylindrical body 12 is lifted and extended in turn.
When the fourth cylindrical body 12D is lowered, the weight of the inner cylindrical body 12 causes the second and third cylindrical bodies 12B and 12C, which are connected by the linkage mechanism 14 and supported by the locking portion 36 of the linkage body 30 hooked onto the holding body 32, to descend together. As the fourth cylindrical body 12D is lowered and the second cylindrical body 12B comes to rest on the ground, the guide portion 34 of the linkage body 30 of the third cylindrical body 12C is guided by the holding body 32 of the second cylindrical body 12B, and as the fourth cylindrical body 12D descends, the third cylindrical body 12C, which is connected by the linkage mechanism 14, descends together. As the fourth cylindrical body 12D is lowered, when the third cylindrical body 12C touches the ground and stops, the guide portion 34 of the linking body 30 of the fourth cylindrical body 12D is guided by the holding body 32 of the third cylindrical body 12C, and the fourth cylindrical body 12D descends, returning to its contracted state when it touches the ground. To stop the extendable cover 10 in an extended state at a certain height, the positioning portion 24 spanning the front and rear across the top opening and/or the lid portion 16 covering the top opening can be hooked onto the top edge of the case C stored in the storage space to stop the fourth cylindrical body 12D, thereby maintaining the extended state (see Figure 10).
When the tubular body 12 is extended or retracted, the linking mechanism 14 described above guides the guide portion 34 of the linking body 30 by the holding body 32 so that movement in the front, rear, left, and right directions is restricted except for up and down. The linking body 30 moves up and down in response to the vertical displacement of the tubular body 12 to which the fixed end 30a is fixed. Furthermore, since the linking body 30 moves up and down in the same orientation as the tubular body 12, there is no need for deformation, such as folding back, as the tubular body 12 is reversed. Because the linking body 30 is guided while maintaining its orientation by the holding body 32, the linking body 30 is prevented from bending or getting caught on the tubular body 12, and the linking mechanism 14 smoothly links with the displacement of the tubular body 12. Therefore, the telescopic cover 10 links multiple tubular bodies 12 together through the smoothly linking linking mechanism 14, allowing the tubular bodies 12 to be smoothly extended or retracted. The linking mechanism 14 guides the guide portion 34 of the linking body 30, which passes through the holder 32, by the holder 32 to define the displacement path, thereby guiding the path of vertical displacement of the tubular body 12 so that it remains straight. As a result, the linking mechanism 14 prevents problems such as the tubular bodies 12, 12 interlocking at an angle with each other, allowing the telescopic cover 10 to smoothly extend or retract the tubular body 12.
The linking mechanism 14 has a plate-like linking body 30 guided by the holding body 32. When the guide portion 34 of the linking body 30 engages with the holding body 32, the guide portion 34 functions like a pillar, guiding the displacement path of the tubular body 12 to be straight. This prevents problems such as the tubular bodies 12, 12 interlocking with each other at an angle, allowing the telescopic cover 10 to smoothly extend or contract the tubular body 12. Furthermore, the linking body 30, which is a plate-like body provided along the wall of the tubular body 12, can also function as a support to enhance the rigidity of the wall.
The linking mechanism 14 has both the fixed end 30a on one end of the linking body 30 and the locking end 30b on the other end fixed to the tubular body 12, allowing the linking body 30 to be positioned along the wall of the tubular body 12. This maintains the position of the linking body 30, improving the effectiveness of the linking mechanism 14 in guiding the vertical displacement of the tubular body 12.
The linking mechanism 14 is configured so that the fixed end 30a of the linking body 30 is fixed to the upper edge of the outer cylindrical body 12 and the holding body 32 is correspondingly provided on the upper edge of the inner cylindrical body 12, thereby linking the inner cylindrical body 12 so that it displaces upward as the outer cylindrical body 12 displaces upward. In this way, when the cylindrical body 12 is extended, the guide portion 34 of the linking body 30 is exposed to the inside of the cylindrical body 12, and the linking body 30 and holding body 32 of the linking mechanism 14 are not exposed to the outside of the extendable cover 10, preventing external interference such as the linking mechanism 14 getting caught on a cart or the like.
The telescopic cover 10 has a linking mechanism 14 on each of the opposing sides of the cylindrical body 12, sandwiching the storage space between them. Therefore, the telescopic cover 10 is guided and supported in a balanced manner from both sides of the cylindrical body 12 by the two linking mechanisms 14, 14, positioned on either side of the storage space, allowing the multiple cylindrical bodies 12 to extend and retract more smoothly.

(1) In the embodiment, of the cylindrical bodies adjacent to each other in the contracted state, a linking body is provided on the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body, and a holding body is provided on the outer surface of the inner cylindrical body. However, the opposite configuration may be adopted, where of the cylindrical bodies adjacent to each other in the contracted state, a linking body is provided on the outer surface of the inner cylindrical body, and a holding body is provided on the inner surface of the outer cylindrical body. In this case, the cylindrical bodies are sequentially lifted and extended starting from the inner cylindrical body.

In this case, the cylindrical body is lifted and extended sequentially from the innermost one.
(3) In the embodiment, the locking end of the linking body is fixed to the cylindrical body, but it is also possible to fix only the fixed end of the linking body to the cylindrical body, and not to fix the locking end to the cylindrical body. In this case, it is sufficient to provide a locking portion on the linking body that protrudes from the guide portion.
(4) In the embodiment, a locking portion that protrudes from the guide portion is provided on the connecting body, but the shape that protrudes from the guide portion may be omitted and the fixed portion of the locking end fixed to the tubular body may be set as the locking portion.
