Description

The present invention relates to a skylight.

Conventionally, skylights have been known that consist of a grid of mullions and baffles, with glass held in place by these. However, there has been a demand for improved ease of installation for such skylights.

In light of the above-mentioned circumstances, the present invention aims to provide a skylight that is easy to install.

To achieve the above objective, the skylight according to the invention of claim 1 comprises an upper stand, a lower stand, a right blind, and a left blind. The upper stand and the lower stand have glass openings and hollow sections located below the glass openings, with drainage gutters provided continuously between the upper stand and the lower stand within the hollow sections. The right and left blinds have glass openings, the longitudinal ends of which are located between the upper stand and the lower stand. The bottom walls of the glass openings of the right and left blinds are located lower than the bottom wall of the glass opening of the upper stand, with their longitudinal ends facing the drainage gutters. Water that enters the glass opening of the upper stand enters the glass opening of the blinds and then flows into the drainage gutters, and water that enters the glass opening of the blinds flows into the drainage gutters.

The skylight according to the invention of claim 1 comprises upper standoffs, lower standoffs, right blinds, and left blinds. The upper standoffs and lower standoffs have glass openings and hollow sections located below the glass openings. Drainage gutters are provided continuously between the upper standoffs and lower standoffs within the hollow sections. The right standoffs and left blinds have glass openings, the longitudinal ends of which are located between the upper standoffs and lower standoffs. The bottom walls of the glass openings of the right standoffs and left blinds are lower than the bottom wall of the glass opening of the upper standoff, and their longitudinal ends face the drainage gutters. Water that enters the glass opening of the upper standoffs enters the glass openings of the blinds and then flows into the drainage gutters, and water that enters the glass openings of the blinds flows into the drainage gutters. This eliminates the need to seal the gaps between the longitudinal ends of the standoffs and blinds, making installation easy. Furthermore, any water that gets into the glass openings of the mullion or the blind glass openings is drained without leakage through a drainage gutter installed inside the hollow part of the mullion, making it highly waterproof.

Embodiments of the present invention will now be described with reference to the drawings. Figures 1 to 7 show one embodiment of a skylight of the present invention. This skylight forms the roof of an atrium space, and as shown in Figure 3, mullions 1, 1, ... and transoms 2, 2, ... are arranged in a grid pattern, with glass 9 attached to each opening formed by the mullions 1 and transoms 2, allowing light to enter from the entire roof. As shown in Figures 1 and 3, mullions 1 are arranged at an angle so that the underwater side is lower. Mullions 1 are not strictly straight, but rather the angle gradually becomes steeper as they go belowwater. Mullions 1 and transoms 2 are fixed to the main body 11 with fasteners 10.

The mullion 1 is formed from an extruded aluminum alloy profile, and as shown in Figure 2, has glass openings 3, 3 at the top of its cross section that hold the side edges of the glass panes 9, 9 arranged on both the left and right sides of the mullion 1. The top walls of the glass openings 3, 3 are composed of removable ledges 12. The underside of the glass panes 9 is supported by pre-attached beads 13, and they are held in place by filling a wet sealant 14 between the top surface of the glass panes 9 and the ledges 12. Rainwater that seeps into the glass openings 3, 3 flows from above the water to below the water on the bottom walls 4 of the glass openings 3, 3.
A rectangular hollow 5 is provided below the glass openings 3, 3 of the mullions 1, and a drainage gutter 6 is provided along the longitudinal direction within the hollow 5. The drainage gutter 6 is made of rubber or resin and has a U-shaped cross section with left and right side walls and a bottom wall. Locking portions 15, 15 formed on the upper ends of the side walls are engaged with locking grooves 16, 16 of approximately C-shaped cross section formed on the underside of the bottom wall 4 of the glass openings 3, 3, so that the drainage gutter is attached in a suspended form in the center of the left and right direction of the bottom wall 4 of the glass openings 3, 3. Furthermore, a steel reinforcing member 17 is provided along the entire length within the hollow 5.
A bolt holding groove 19 for holding the head of a bolt 18 is provided along the longitudinal direction on the underside of the mullion 1, and the bolt 18 held in the bolt holding groove 19 and a nut 20 attach the mullion 1 to the fastener 10.

The transom 2 is formed from an extruded aluminum alloy profile, just like the mullion 1, and as shown in Figure 1, has glass openings 7, 7 at the top of the cross section that hold the belowwater edge of the glass 9 placed above the water and the abovewater edge of the glass 9 placed below the water. The upper walls of the glass openings 7, 7 are composed of a removable ledge 21. The underside of the glass 9 is supported by a pre-attached bead 13, and is held in place by filling a wet sealant 14 between the upper surface of the glass 9 and the ledge 21. The bottom walls 8 of the glass openings 7, 7 of the transom 2 are located lower than the bottom walls 4 of the glass openings 3, 3 of the mullion 1.
A hollow portion 22 having a rectangular cross section is provided below the glass openings 7, 7 of the transom 2, and a steel reinforcing member 23 is provided in the hollow portion 22 along its entire length.
A bolt holding groove 19 for holding the head of a bolt 18 is provided along the longitudinal direction on the underside of the mullion 2, and the bolt 18 held in the bolt holding groove 19 and a nut 20 attach the mullion 2 to the fastener 10. The underside of the mullion 2 and the underside of the mullion 1 are located on the same plane.

As shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6, the mullion 1 is divided into an upper mullion 1a and a lower mullion 1b on the above-water and below-water sides of the transom 2, and a gap 24 is provided between the below-water end of the upper mullion 1a and the above-water end of the lower mullion 1b. As shown in Figure 6, the below-water end of the upper mullion 1a is cut out below the bottom wall 4 of the glass openings 3, 3. As shown in Figures 4 to 6, a notch 26 is provided at the above-water end of the lower mullion 1b, spanning the bottom wall 4 of the glass openings 3, 3 and a protrusion 25 rising from the bottom wall 4.
As shown in Figure 6, the drain gutter 6a provided within the hollow section 5 of the upper stand 1a has its underwater end extending beyond the crossbeam 2 into the hollow section 5 of the lower stand 1b, and the underwater end of the drain gutter 6a of the upper stand 1a is connected to the abovewater end of the drain gutter 6b provided within the hollow section 5 of the lower stand 1b by a connecting member 27 within the hollow section 5 of the lower stand 1b. This makes the drain gutter 6a of the upper stand 1a and the drain gutter 6b of the lower stand 1b continuous.
The connecting member 27 is made of rubber or resin and has a U-shaped cross section that surrounds the drainage gutters 6a and 6b. A recess 29 is provided on the inner surface near the abovewater side for filling with a wet sealant 28. This connecting member 27 is pre-attached with adhesive or the like to the abovewater end of the drainage gutter 6b of the lower riser 1b. The belowwater end of the drainage gutter 6a of the upper riser 1a is inserted inside the connecting member 27, and as shown in Figures 5 and 6, wet sealant 28 is filled from the inner periphery between the belowwater end of the drainage gutter 6a of the upper riser 1a and the abovewater end of the drainage gutter 6b of the lower riser 1b, connecting the drainage gutters 6a and 6b. The recess 29 in the connecting member 27 allows the sealant 28 to wrap around the outer periphery of the drainage gutter 6a of the upper riser 1a. The notch 26 at the abovewater end of the lower riser 1b is provided for filling with the sealant 28.

As shown in Figures 4, 5 and 7, the gable 2 is divided into a right gable 2a and a left gable 2b on the left and right sides of the mullion 1. As shown in Figure 7, the longitudinal end of the right gable 2a and the longitudinal end of the left gable 2b have a notch 30 below the bottom wall 8 of the glass openings 7, 7, and as shown in Figure 5, a notch 31 is provided in the above-water wall of the above-water side glass opening 7.
As shown in Figures 4 and 5, the left end of the right blind 2a and the right end of the left blind 2b extend into the gap 24 between the belowwater end of the upper blind 1a and the abovewater end of the lower blind 1b, and the belowwater end of the glass openings 3, 3 of the upper blind 1a extends into the abovewater glass openings 7 of the right blind 2a and left blind 2b. Furthermore, as shown in Figure 7, the longitudinal ends of the bottom walls 8 of the glass openings 7, 7 of the right blind 2a and left blind 2b face the drainage gutter 6 (the drainage gutter 6a of the upper blind 1a). A drainage groove 33 is provided on the underside of the bottom walls 8 of the glass openings 7, 7 of the right blind 2a and left blind 2b, located inside the drainage gutter 6.

The intersection of the mullion 1 and the gable 2 is configured as described above, and as shown in Figures 5 and 6, rainwater 32a flowing down the bottom wall 4 of the glass openings 3, 3 of the upper mullion 1a enters the glass openings 7 above the water in the right gable 2a and left gable 2b, then enters the drainage gutter 6 from the glass openings 7 and is drained through the drainage gutter 6 that is provided continuously within the hollow portion 5 of the mullion 1. Rainwater 32b that enters the glass openings 7, 7 of the right gable 2a and left gable 2b flows from the longitudinal ends into the drainage gutter 6 and is drained through the drainage gutter 6 that is provided continuously within the hollow portion 5 of the mullion 1. A drainage groove 33 is provided on the underside of the bottom wall 8 of the glass openings 7, 7 of the gable 2a, 2b, above the drainage gutter 6, preventing rainwater 32b from flowing down the underside of the bottom wall 8 of the glass openings 7, 7 and leaking out of the drainage gutter 6. Therefore, even if the seal around the glass 9 breaks and rainwater 32a, 32b seeps into the glass openings 3, 7 of the mullion 1 and gable 2, the rainwater will be drained downstream through the drainage gutter 6 without leaking, and will not fall below.

Next, the construction procedure for this skylight will be explained. First, the connecting member 27 is attached to the above-water end of the drainage gutter 6b of the lower stand 1b in advance, and the below-water end of the drainage gutter 6a of the upper stand 1a is inserted into the connecting member 27, while the upper stand 1a and the lower stand 1b are positioned with a predetermined distance 24 between them.
Thereafter, a wet sealing material 28 is filled between the ends of the drainage gutter 6a of the upper stand 1a and the drainage gutter 6b of the lower stand 1b from the inner side of the connecting member 27, thereby connecting the drainage gutter 6a, 6b.
Next, the longitudinal ends of the right and left transoms 2a and 2b are inserted into the gap 24 between the upper and lower transoms 1a and 1b, and the longitudinal ends of the bottom walls 8 of the glass openings 7, 7 are positioned so that they face the drainage gutter 6.
After all the mullions 1 and the transoms 2 have been placed, glass 9 is placed from above in each opening formed by the mullions 1 and the transoms 2.
Thereafter, the battens 12, 21 are attached to the mullions 1 and the transoms 2, and a wet sealant 14 is filled into the gap between the upper surface of the glass 9 and the battens 12, 21 to fix the glass 9.

Fig. 8 shows another embodiment of the skylight of the present invention. The following will explain the differences from the embodiments described so far.
As shown in Figure 8(a), the mullions 1 and 2 are arranged to cross each other diagonally. Therefore, the longitudinal ends of the upper mullions 1a, lower mullions 1b, right mullions 2a, and left mullions 2b are cut diagonally.
As shown in Figure 8(c), a drainage gutter 6 is provided in the hollow portion of the mullion 1, as in the first embodiment, and this drainage gutter 6 is made of an extruded aluminum alloy. The drainage gutter 6 has groove-like fitting portions 34, 34 formed along the longitudinal direction on the outer surfaces of the left and right side walls, and a strip-like protrusion 35 formed along the longitudinal direction on the underside of the bottom wall.
The drain gutter 6a of the upper stand 1a and the drain gutter 6b of the lower stand 1b are connected by a connecting member 27. The connecting member 27 is a member made of rubber or resin with a roughly U-shaped cross section, and fits into fitting portions 34, 34 and protrusion 35 on the side of the drain gutter 6. The connecting member 27 is attached in advance to one end of either the drain gutter 6a of the upper stand 1a or the drain gutter 6b of the lower stand 1b, and the other end is fitted into the connecting member 27 in the longitudinal direction to install it.

As described above, this skylight comprises upper stand 1a, lower stand 1b, right blind 2a and left blind 2b, and upper stand 1a and lower stand 1b have glass openings 3, 3 and a hollow portion 5 located below the glass openings 3, 3, and a drainage gutter 6 is provided within hollow portion 5 to connect upper stand 1a and lower stand 1b, right blind 2a and left blind 2b have glass openings 7, 7, and the longitudinal ends of the glass openings 7, 7 are located between upper stand 1a and lower stand 1b, and right blind 2a and left blind The bottom wall 8 of the glass openings 7, 7 of mullions 1a and 2b is located lower than the bottom wall 4 of the glass openings 3, 3 of the upper mullion 1a, and its longitudinal ends face the drainage gutter 6. Water 32a that enters the glass openings 3, 3 of the upper mullion 1a enters the glass openings 7 of the mullion 2a and 2b and then flows into the drainage gutter 6, and water 32b that enters the glass openings 7, 7 of the mullion 2a and 2b flows into the drainage gutter 6. This eliminates the need to seal the gaps between the longitudinal ends of the mullions 1a, 1b and the mullion 2a, 2b, making installation easy. Moreover, water that enters the glass openings 3, 3 of the mullions 1a and 1b and the glass openings 7, 7 of the mullion 2a and 2b is drained without leakage through the drainage gutter 6 installed in the hollow part 5 of the mullion 1, resulting in excellent watertightness.
The drainage gutter 6 is formed separately from the upright 1, so that the construction can be easily carried out by cutting the upright 1 and the drainage gutter 6 separately and combining them.
By making the drainage gutter 6 from rubber or resin, even if the mullion 1 is slightly bent or curved midway, the drainage gutter 6 can be deformed according to the bending or the like, and construction can be easily performed.
The gutter 2a, 2b are provided with a water drain groove 33 on the back surface of the bottom wall 8 of the glass opening 7, 7 at the end in the longitudinal direction, thereby preventing rainwater from flowing down the back surface of the bottom wall 8 of the glass opening 7, 7 to the outside of the drainage gutter 6.
In this skylight, the below-water end of the drainage gutter 6a of the upper tier 1a and the above-water end of the drainage gutter 6b of the lower tier 1b are connected by a connecting member 27, making it easy to install the drainage gutter 6 continuously in the upper tier 1a and the lower tier 1b.
In addition, this skylight has the ends of the drainage gutter 6a of the upper stand 1a and the drainage gutter 6b of the lower stand 1b sealed from the inner periphery of the drainage gutter 6, so water can be reliably prevented from leaking from the joints of the drainage gutter 6.

The present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above. The cross-sectional shape and material of the mullion and interlining can be changed as appropriate. The cross-sectional shape and material of the drainage gutter can also be changed as appropriate. The drainage gutter can also be formed integrally with the mullion.
