Abstract

1418018 Thrust transmitting link; hydromechanical actuation of disc brakes GIRLING Ltd 9 Jan 1974 [11 Dec 1972] 56970/72 Headings F2K and F2E In a motor-vehicle hydraulically operated caliper-type disc brake arrangement, the relative spacing i.e. axial distance between the disc brake pad 4 and its operating piston 1 is maintained at a constant value by a thrust transmitting member 6 comprising a number of part-spherically ended pins 19 (three as shown) carried by a flexibly resilient disc-like member 20 located in a peripheral groove 21 in the piston 1, the arrangement being such that when the disc brake pad 4 moves transversely relative the piston 1, i.e. on brake pad engagement, the pins 19 move, i.e. roll, on surfaces 17, 18 into the inclined position in Fig. 2 whereby the axial spacing between the brake pad 4 and piston 1 remains unchanged. As shown, the thrust pins 19 are arranged between a plate 9, seated in the piston 1, and a spreader plate 11 spigotted to a backing plate 8 of the brake pad 4, a tension spring 16 connected between the plate 9 and a spigot member 12 in the plate 11 serving to urge the plates together to retain the assembly. Alternatively, (Fig. 3, not shown), the tension spring 16 may be replaced by one or more blade springs (27) bolted to the spreader plate 11 and engaging, through notched reliefs in the flexible member 20, the outer edge of the piston groove 21. On initial brake release, after brake application, the deformed resilient member 20 (Fig. 2) recovers to restore the assembly to its initial condition (Fig. 1).
