Abstract
PURPOSE: The emulsion polymerization is conducted in the presence of a pecific emulsifier to form said water-born emulsion for coating iron surfaces that is excellent in coating under high temperature and humidity, water resistance, luster and hardness and has cold-drying properties.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of epichlorohydrin with bisphenol-A gives an epoxy resin with an average molecular weight of 300W4000 and an epoxy equivalent of 150W3500. A mixture of 30W73 wt% of the resin and 25W68 wt% of a higher fatty acid such as palmitic acid is neutralized with ammonia to form an alkali salt with an acid value of 30W60. The emulsion polymerization of 7W20 parts by wt of the resulting alkali salt, 1.5W3 parts of a phosphate ester surfactant such as monooctyl phosphate, and 100 parts of polymerizable monomers containing 0.5W12 % of an ethylenically α.β-unsaturated carboxylic acid is carried out in an aqueous medium to produce the objective water-born emulsion.
