Abstract
PURPOSE: The oxidation of (poly)oxyethylene ether with molecular oxygen on the terminal hydroxyethyl groups in a non-alkaline aqeuous solution is conducted in the presence of a platinum-carbon catalyst to produce corresponding carboxylic acid.
CONSTITUTION: The oxidation of (poly)oxyethylene ether of formula: R-O- (CH2CH2O)n H (R is 1-30C alkyl, aryl or alaryl; n is 1-100) in a non-alkali aqueous solution is conducted in the presence of a platinum-carbon catalyst with molecular oxygen at normal or elevated pressure and 50-200°C to produce corresponding carboxylic acid as polyoxylethylenealkyletheracetic acid.
EFFECT: No fission of ether linkages occurs and the process is economic since the salt removal is unnecessary and the catalyst life is largely prolonged although the reaction rate is retarded. USE;Solvents, surface-active agents, antistatic agents and dyeing assistants.
