Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the hot workability of an austenitic S free-cutting stainless steel and prevent tip cracking by adjusting the Ni balance of the composition of the steel to a specified value or more and suitably regulating the contained O and Ca to convert the existing sulfides into those of a type favorable for hot workability.
CONSTITUTION: This austenitic S free-cutting stainless steel contains 0.03W0.15% C, 0.10W1.00% Si, 1.00W2.00% Mn, <0.20% P, 0.15W0.35% S, 8.00W10.00% Ni, 17.00W19.00% Cr, 20W60ppm Ca and <45ppm O. The Ni balance of the steel shown b the equation I is ≥0.7, and the existing sulfides are of a type favorable for hot workability in which the Ca and O contents are ≥20ppm and ≤45ppm, respectively. This steel has high hot workability and causes no tip cracking.
