一般に、エンジンはシリンダブロツクの上面に
ガスケツトを介してシリンダヘツドを重ね、周囲
を複数のボルト又はスタツドボルトで、シリンダ
ヘツドをシリンダブロツクに締着している。シリ
ンダヘツドには一側に吸気孔が設けられ、他側に
排気孔が設けられているので、温度差が大きく、
特に排気孔側は排気ガスで熱せられるので高温に
なり、使用時と不使用時の温度差が大きい。又排
気孔側と吸気孔側の使用時の温度差は、空冷エン
ジンでは吸収しきれない。このため、特に排気孔
側がシリンダブロツクやシリンダヘツドの熱膨脹
による伸縮が大きく、この繰返しによつて間に挾
んだガスケツトにへたりが生じ、複元作用がなく
なつてシール効果が低下し、ガスが吹抜けるよう
になる。

ト4に対し、排気孔6側のボルト又はスタツドボ
ルト4を熱膨脹係数の大きい材質のものを使用す
る。具体的な例としては、吸気孔5側には通常の
膨脹係数11程度の鋼製のボルト又はスタツドボ
ルト4を用いる。これに対し、排気孔6側は膨脹
係数17〜18程度の、オーステナイト系のステンレ
ス鋼等のボルト又はスタツドボルト4を使用す
る。

又はスタツドボルトも伸び、締付力が均一にでき
て、ガスケツトを片寄つて押圧することがなくな
る。こうして、ガスケツトの負担が軽減できるの
で、温度差を繰返しても、ガスケツトのへたりが
少く、複元性を保つて、ガスが吹抜けるようなこ
とを防ぐことができる。
