る。一般的に外部電極は、第2図の上ガラス1の
外部接続用電極部1a,1bに出される。この場
合は時刻表示セグメントのパターンと曜日の表示
パターン間の距離aが大きく取れない欠点を有し
ている。すなわち、本来この種の曜日表示装置
は、曜日を隠すために液晶セルのパターンの面積
がかなり必要とするため距離aは必然的に小さな
ものとなり、距離a内での表示用電極パターンか
ら外部接続用電極部1a,1bまで引き回す配線
用電極パターン(図示せず)の電極巾を極度に細
くしたり又は本数を減らさねばならないと云う設
計的な制約が果せられている。又、これを避けよ
うとすれば時、分、秒及び曜の表示用電極パター
ンを小さくせねばならず、時刻の読み取りを読み
難いものとしていた。又、アラーム機能、ストツ
プウオツチ機能、世界時計機能及び計算機能等の
各種機能が付加された時計が出現するにいたり、
その表示要素が多くなり、増々前述引き回し関係
はきびしくなり、更に重要な問題となつている。

る。曜日の表示方式は、3文字の1つだけを表示
し、残りの2文字を電極パターンで隠してある。
現在液晶セルは、12時38分56秒、日付は26日、曜
日は金曜日である。この方式を取つた場合、時刻
を示す電極セグメントパターンと、曜日を示す電
極パターンの距離bが従来例より大きく出来、液
晶セルのセグメントパターンの外部電極への引き
回し線を、このbの間をたくさん通す事が可能と
なる利点がある。もちろん曜日の3文字の一文字
を隠し、2文字は常時見える様にしておいても良
い。又、曜日印刷文字を漢字3文字にして(月曜
日〜火曜日、………)とそのうち2文字を隠す様
にしても良い。すなわち、本発明の曜日表示装置
は液晶セルの上偏光板、下偏光板、導光板又は反
射板等に印刷された7曜日を表示する中の1曜日
の文字数をN個とし、前記7曜日の中の6曜日の
文字数の(N−1)個から1個までを液晶セルの
曜日パターンを点灯して見え難くし、残りの1曜
日は、N個の曜日文字を液晶セルの曜日パターン
を消灯することにより見えるようにしたものであ
る。
