鋼管を高張力、高靭性化する方法のひとつに他
の鋼材製品と同様に焼入れ、焼戻しの処理がとら
れる。従来から鋼管の焼入方法として、加熱され
た鋼管を水中に浸漬させて焼入れを行う方法が知
られている。しかし鋼管全体を単に冷却水に浸す
だけでは鋼管表面が冷却水の沸騰により生じた蒸
気膜で蔽われてしまい、管の冷却速度が通常の焼
入れに必要なマルテンサイト変態のための臨界冷
却速度よりも遅くなつて、焼入れ効果が得られな
くなる。この蒸気膜を除去するために鋼管の内外
面に高圧水を噴射することが行われている。また
焼むらを防止するために水中で鋼管を回転させる
方法がとられる。このような浸漬焼入方法におい
て、通常は加熱した鋼管を空中から水槽の冷却水
中に投入するが、より均一な焼入れをするため
に、浸漬する以前から鋼管を回転させながら降下
させて浸漬するので鋼管の保持・回転装置が複雑
となる。また鋼管の水中降下に伴つて内面冷却ノ
ズルも移動させる必要があり、鋼管と内面冷却ノ
ズルとの位置合せがやつかいであり、時間がかか
るという問題があつた。このような問題を解決す
る方法として、加熱した鋼管を水槽内の適当な深
さ位置に保持しておき、該鋼管を回転させながら
水槽の冷却水の水位を上げて浸漬、焼入れを行
い、焼入れ後に水位を下げて鋼管を取り出すとい
う方法が考えられる。この場合は鋼管の回転駆動
装置を水槽内に固定設置でき、内面冷却ノズルの
位置合せも容易であるが、通常の注水、排水の手
段では水槽の冷却水の水位を手早く上昇、下降さ
せるのが難しく、給排水の設備も大規模になる等
の問題がある。

変らず、蒸発等による減少分のみを適宜補給する
