In a magnetic card reader which reads data with a time difference between two magnetic heads, and demodulates the read magnetic recording signal by a demodulation circuit to extract data, a magnetic recording signal discriminating means connected to the magnetic head on the reading side and outputting a discriminating signal by discriminating the presence or absence of reproduction output from the magnetic recording band; and the magnetic recording signal discriminating means when the leading edge of the magnetic recording medium is detected. magnetic recording medium detection means for outputting a detection signal serving as a determination timing; and switching means for switching connection between the two magnetic heads and the demodulation circuit; If the determination result is that there is an output, the demodulation circuit is connected to the magnetic head side through which the magnetic recording band passes first, and if there is no output, the demodulation circuit is connected to the magnetic head side through which the magnetic recording band passes later.
