Conventionally, in this type of detection device, a load cell, such as a strain gauge, is attached to the steering shaft, and the output from this gauge is taken out as steering torque. However, in such conventional devices, since the steering shaft rotates,
This had the disadvantage that extracting electrical signals from the movable part was complicated.

FIG. 1 shows the meshing portion of a conventional rack and pinion gear in an automobile. The pinion gear 1 is rotatably supported by a casing 3 by a bearing 2, and a steering shaft 4 is integrally provided at one end of the pinion gear 1. A steering wheel (not shown) is fixed to this shaft, so when the steering wheel rotates, the pinion gear rotates. A rack gear 5, which meshes with the pinion gear, is slidably received by a guide 6 on the back side, that is, the rear side, on the opposite side from the pinion gear. This guide constantly presses the rack gear toward the pinion gear by means of an elastic body 8 provided between the guide and the cap 7. The cap 7 is screwed to the casing 3.

The sensor means 10 according to the present invention consists of a sensor 11 for detecting displacement of the rack gear in the rearward direction, that is, in a direction away from the pinion gear, and a transmitting body 12 for transmitting the displacement of the rack gear to the sensor.
The sensor 11 is accommodated, for example, in a recessed hole 7a provided in the cap 7 and fixed by appropriate means (not shown). In the illustrated embodiment, the transmission body 12 consists of a rigid rod whose other end is in contact with the rear surface of the rack gear and the surface of the sensor.

The sensor 11 may be a conventional pressure sensitive semiconductor sensor or a resistive strain sensor. As another form, a pressurized resistance rubber 20 is used in the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, and a differential transformer 30 is used in the embodiment shown in FIG.

In the above configuration, when the steering wheel is rotated to the left or right for steering, the pinion gear 1 rotates and a load from the wheels (not shown) is applied to the rack 5. The rack gear then escapes backwards, ie in the direction indicated by the arrow. The displacement at this time is detected by a sensor. This output is then detected as steering torque.

According to the present invention, the rearward load displacement generated on the back side of the rack gear can be detected by a sensor fixed within the gear casing of the non-rotating part, so there is no mechanically worn part and the overall structure is compact. In addition, effects such as excellent durability can be obtained.
