It is known that gingivitis and alveolar pyorrhea are directly caused by dental plaque and tartar. Dental plaque is a sticky substance formed by various oral bacteria adsorbing and multiplying, and dental tartar is the plaque that is further calcified by calcium and phosphoric acid in saliva.
Plaque can be easily removed with a toothbrush, but tartar cannot be removed unless it is scraped off by scaling.
Therefore, brushing your teeth using a toothpaste that prevents the formation of tartar is thought to be effective in preventing gingivitis and alveolar pyorrhea, and various oral drugs and their compositions that promote the prevention of tartar have been developed. is proposed. Zeolite itself is already incorporated into toothpastes, etc.
Its effectiveness in preventing tartar has also been demonstrated, and a patent application has been filed for particularly fine zeolite for tooth brushing as being effective in preventing tartar (Public Patent Publication, 1982-24112).

On the other hand, patients with gingivitis and alveolar pyorrhea often have strong bad breath, which is said to be mainly due to the presence of volatile sulfides such as methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide produced in the oral cavity in their breath. If zeolite adsorbs and removes these substances that cause bad breath, it is thought to be effective in preventing bad breath in addition to preventing tartar, but zeolite shows excellent adsorption effects on hydrogen sulfide and ammonia in dry systems. However, in systems where a large amount of water coexists, such as in the oral cavity,
Because it adsorbs water with the highest priority, there was a problem that it was difficult to see any effects [Akio Oyamada; On the deodorizing and deodorizing effects of zeolite, "Fragrance Journal" No. 72 (1985) P79-82].

Under these circumstances, the present inventor conducted intensive research and found that acid-treated zeolite has an excellent adsorption effect on substances that cause bad breath even in the coexistence of water, and completed the present invention.

Preferably, the fine particles are about 10 μm. Natural zeolite requires sophisticated pulverization technology to produce such fine particles, but synthetic zeolite is advantageous because the particle size can be adjusted during the synthesis process. Preferred synthetic zeolites include, for example, A

Examples of acids include mineral acids such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid; organic acids such as citric acid, succinic acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid. Some zeolites, such as A-type zeolite, have their structures destroyed by acid, so the acid is generally made into a solution of around 1M, and this is gradually added to the slurry of zeolite while stirring. is preferred.

It is preferable to process it so that it becomes 6. The pH of zeolite is determined by sampling over time.
A water suspension with a solid content of approximately 5% by weight is prepared, and its PH is measured using a PH meter. When the predetermined PH is reached, the treatment is terminated and thoroughly washed.

In this experiment, we used methyl mercaptan, a major substance that causes bad breath, and 4A type zeolite, a type of synthetic zeolite, with an average particle size of 3.63μ. i.e. 10 in a 10 ml glass stoppered test tube.
Precisely weigh ~100 mg of zeolite sample,
Add 3 ml of 1 ppm methyl mercaptan aqueous solution, stopper, shake well, and let stand at 20°C for 15 minutes.
Free methyl mercaptan was determined by the DBC-Conway method. The DBC-Conway method uses BDC-OH (4,
4-bis-dimethylaminodiphenylcarbonylcarbinol) is acidic and exhibits a strong blue color based on carbonium immonium ions;
This method takes advantage of the fact that this blue color disappears quickly when an SH compound is reacted. in particular,
BDC solution (0.1% BDC-OH acetone solution 50μ, 50mM Tris-Maleate of PH6.5) was placed in one reservoir of Conwaydish (a micrometer tester manufactured by Shibata), which is a sealed container with two reservoirs separated inside.
Add 2 ml of Buffer (10 ml of 10% sodium lauryl sulfate aqueous solution) and 3 ml of the sample to the other reservoir, then seal.
Incubate at 37°C for 2 hours. Thereafter, the absorbance of the BDC solution at 610 nm was measured after cooling to room temperature. Separately, a calibration curve was prepared in the same manner, and the amount of free methyl mercaptan was calculated. Figure 1 shows the results. The vertical axis shows the amount of free methyl mercaptan that remained without being adsorbed to the zeolite.
The horizontal axis shows the amount of zeolite added. This figure shows that 10 mg of acid-treated zeolite has the same effect as 50 mg of untreated zeolite, that is, acid-treated zeolite is superior to untreated zeolite in adsorbing substances that cause bad breath.
