I don’t really like it when Jason-centric fics where he and Bruce are at odds make Batman incompetent/a bad hero? Bear with me here.
It’s one thing in stories where it’s actually Evil Batman or an au where Batman is a secretly bad person using the mandate of heroism to hurt people while feeling righteous ect. but in stories that are ostensibly set in the mainverse/canon having him not be doing anything with Wayne Enterprises for Gotham’s poorest or Batman being worse than Red Hood in protecting the people just feels… forced? Disingenuous? Off-putting?
I don’t know. I just can’t buy it and I end up feeling like, it’s not ABOUT that for me. Bruce being a bad or mediocre parent to Jason is a separate issue from his competence as a vigilante! People can do good things, help tons of people, and still be shit to their kid!
I get why having Jason one up Batman by being a better hero as Red Hood is satisfying but you can do that without making the Bat shit at his job, in fact it’s more impressive for Jason to succeed in those cases like if he leverages his crime lord status to permanently remove influence/henchmen from rogues in a way Bruce can’t or if he stays one step ahead of Bruce so that he can’t find him to beat him up the way he does the other rogues/figures out his plan a beat too late.
The thing is one of the writing techniques I hate most is putting down a character to prop another character up, it’s lazy! It’s like saying “I’m not going to show you how great x is but just look how bad y’s doing in comparison”.
So I recently learned Jason had an adoptive villainous goth astronomer mom at one point, and I love that for them.
She should come back - they can have a vampire mom & zombie son reunion!

One piece au where on one of the adventures pre-timeskip Luffy (who is under the impression that the people in gray terminal literally burned to death instead of most of them being saved by the revs) sees one the people from gray terminal (they joined the revs after being saved) and he just stares at them. And one of the crew noticed and is like luffy?? You good??? But luffy just keeps staring at this random guy who eventually realizes hes being stared at before looking back and recognizing whos staring at him and luffy sees that hes been recgonized so it totally IS that guy from gray terminal who definitely burned to death and i feel like this is a very interesting and fun way to turn a chase through the city into meeting Sabo early :)
