“Everybody gets told to write about what they know. The trouble with many of us is that at the earlier stages of life we think we know everything – or to put it more usefully, we are often unaware of the scope and structure of our ignorance. Ignorance is not just a blank space on a person’s mental map. It has contours and coherence, and for all I know rules of operation as well. So as a corollary to writing about what we know, maybe we should add getting familiar with our ignorance, and the possibilities therein for ruining a good story.”

modu 默读 10th anniversary extra (EN)
hi hello! like i mentioned previously, i managed to find the entirety of CN raws for the new modu extra that priest wrote for the 10th anniversary release!
since i am obsessed with this novel, but i unfortunately do not speak chinese, i decided to translate the text using various translation softwares (google translate etc., no LLM models such as chatgpt, gemini or other AI tools of similar nature have been used) to compare the output and create the version that hopefully gets pipi’s point across.
if anyone that is fluent in the language would like to obtain the raws and try their hand at translating the text themselves, feel free to ask me and i will share – human work takes priority for me, always.
everyone else, please share your thoughts about the extra in the comments, i have SO MANY feelings about it. without further ado, proceed under the cut for some glorious zhoudu content <3
There‘s something to be said about how Shao Jizu repeatedly blames Zhan Zhao for „stealing his girl“ and claiming that the reason for Linglong to not want to marry him is because of „her feelings for Zhan Zhao“.
The immediate assumption that her actions were because of a man and not for herself—something that she has from the very first episodes reiterated and made clear to (funnily) Zhan Zhao himself. That she refuses to marry someone just because she was told to and that she should be able to judge and decide her own future partner—and she has always been very clear on that throughout the entire series.
Yet again and again Shao Jizu (and other characters, even her Great Aunt) reminded her that she has no place on Zhan Zhao‘s side as a wife and to stop imagining things, even though we as the viewers know that (implications of her feelings aside) that was never the main reason she wanted to stay by his side (and Bai Yutang‘s).
And the sheer poetry when she didn‘t even end up marrying anyone at the end of the story, fully escaping the clutches of expectations placed on her by both other people and the viewers themselves…
Something something amatonormativity alongside misogyny……hmmmm
