Tokyo-based Balmuda's The Clock expresses time through illumination alone, with a "Light Hour" dial featuring a pendulum-like sweep the design team developed after studying the Foucault pendulum at Tokyo's National Museum of Nature and Science. The case is machined from a single block of aluminum into a 75mm square form weighing just 9 ounces, inspired by a classic pocket watch. Three modes cover the day: Relax Time plays ambient soundscapes including rainfall and fireplace audio; Focus Time plays white noise for more distraction-free work; and the Alarm builds gradually over three minutes rather than hitting all at once.
