Directorate for Geosciences (GEO)

The U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for Geosciences (NSF GEO) invests in projects that increase our understanding of the Earth and the processes that shape our environment.

NSF GEO supports the agency's mission to advance and revolutionize research, expand educational opportunities, oversee infrastructure and build partnerships across the geosciences and beyond.

Projects advance knowledge of the Earth, oceans, atmosphere and geospace and translate scientific discoveries to economic and security benefits.

The directorate:

  • Offers funding opportunities that enable geoscience discoveries and inform natural resource management and hazard resiliency.
  • Fuels innovation in critical and emerging technologies that enable observation and exploration.
  • Expands educational and training opportunities across the geosciences to build a capable workforce.
  • Connects researchers to state-of-the-art infrastructure around the world to build geoscience capacity.
  • Builds impactful partnerships both within the agency and with external groups to leverage resources and enable scientific innovations.

NSF Office of Polar Programs

The U.S. National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs (OPP) supports innovative and creative scientific research relating to Earth's polar regions and the global interplay of these regions with others across our planet. OPP is part of the NSF Office of the Director and closely collaborates with GEO.
