“According to Plato, we don't learn anything. Our soul has lived so many lives that we know everything. Teachers and education can only remind us of what we already know.” ― Chuck Palahniuk

A Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Studyblr

When I first discovered Tumblr, I knew I just came across a black hole. I mean, one platform with every single thing I loved, from fandoms to poetry to awful memes–I was addicted. Back then, I wouldn’t have thought that Tumblr would (sorta) save my life. Then I decided to make a Studyblr.

study + tumblr = studyblr!

The first time I witnessed the phenomenon known as the studyblr community, I was strangely intrigued. I started off making edits for tv series and music, but it came to a point where I felt like I was working instead of doing it for leisure, and it was difficult for me to find time to make posts. The first thing I thought when I came across studyblrs was “the busier I am, the more content I have to blog”. What’s more fantastic than having a blog that depends on your hectic life?

So I decided to give it a go and blog about my studies. It came pretty easily to me, considering that I spend nearly 100% of my (insanely scarce) free time online and my life comprises a lot of studying (especially since I had my IGCSEs that year). Plus, seeing other studyblrs work hard motivated me to study instead of wasting away on the internet.

I’ve had my studyblr for a little over a year now, and I’m not even exaggerating when I say that it changed my life. Here are some benefits I’ve received over the past year:

  • I look forward to studying. I guess this is because I’ve never taken multiple approaches to studying, and only after starting a studyblr did I learn of different ways to study. I also get new ideas for making notes! (which is extremely helpful since I am a visual learner)
  • I’ve received tips that not only help me excel academically but also help me care for myself. Once you’ve spent enough time in the community, you’ll realize that there’ll always be someone who’s got your back. You could ask them anything and they’d be more than willing to answer.
  • I’m not as hard on myself as I used to be, which has actually improved my grades and my mental health. I no longer toxify myself by overworking or anything like that, and I feel like I’ve somehow become happier.
  • The studyblr community is like my second family (if not third, if I count my friends in real life). I’ve had tons of great conversations with like-minded individuals. Most of them were about studying, but eventually they branched off into other aspects of our lives, including common interests.

How to Start

Creating a URL

Most studyblrs have the word ‘study’ as a prefix or suffix. However, feel free to experiment with URLs that show other people who you are; nobody will judge you. For example, mine is @eintsein because Einstein is an immensely inspirational person and I find physics pretty interesting. You could like pandas and psychology and choose an URL like @pandapsych or something (this one’s taken, though).

Here are some ideas for things to include:

  • Your name
  • Favorite subject
  • Role models (common ones include Hermione Granger, Elle Woods, and Christina Yang, but this can be anyone you admire)
  • Stationery (pens, highlighter, etc.)
  • Brand names (muji, stabilo, etc.)
  • Study utilities (book, textbook, flash cards, notes, etc.)

Choosing a Theme

I think that simple, clean themes work best for studyblrs, especially content-heavy ones with a lot of text posts. However, the choice is all yours. Here are some theme makers I like:

Finding Blogs to Follow

It shouldn’t be very hard, but one thing I like to do is look through a single studyblr’s blog and see whose posts she/he reblogs. If not, you could always take a look at their blogroll (here’s mine).

Interacting with Other Studyblrs

One thing a lot of people tend to forget about social media is the ‘social’ part. Interact with other studyblrs! I guarantee that none of them will think you’re weird (or at least bad-weird, because good-weird people are the best). To be honest, most of us (myself included) get really hyped when anyone messages us or mentions us in a post.

And don’t forget to be yourself! Don’t try to act like a studyblr stereotype. It might also help to make an introduction post and join networks.

Hashtags

You could tag other studyblrs if you want them to see your posts (e.g. mine’s simply #eintsein). Most of us also use the following hashtags:

  • #studyblr
  • #studyspo
  • #[subject you’re studying]
  • #[stationery]

Products

There are some study materials/utilities that most studyblrs have. However, don’t feel that you need all the fancy stationery or gadgets to be a legitimate studyblr. Besides, there are cheaper alternatives.

Stationery

Here are some common ones:

  • Staedtler Triplus Fineliners
  • Stabilo Point 88 Fineliners
  • Muji Gel Ink Pens
  • Zebra Mildliners
  • Muji binders/notebooks

Plus links that describe more:

Extensions/Apps

The ones you see in almost every studyblr post

Others:

The Bullet Journal

A creative way to plan your life and manage your time! Basically like an entire book of to-do lists plus a little extra artsy stuff.

Tips for Posts

What should I post?

The simplest thing to post would be pictures of what you’re studying. I think this is the most common type of post due to the convenience, i.e. you don’t have to stop whatever you’re doing in order to post something.

You could also post study guides/tips, which obviously takes more time but everybody appreciates the effort! Another popular post type is a resources post, which is essentially just a compilation of helpful links. A longer post with nearly all the information you need would be considered a masterpost.

Picture Taking

One thing that helps more than people think is natural lighting. It gives your pictures clarity as well as the often sought out ‘aesthetic’ quality.

You should also try experimenting with different angles, e.g. flat lays, micro images, etc.

Editing

Most studyblrs use a photoediting app called VSCO Cam which does wonders to your photo, but you could always use the built-in editing tools on your phone. I personally like the apps Faded for photo editing and Over for overlays (text, etc.).

Graphics

Photoshop is my favorite and probably has the most freedom, but if you don’t have the skills, you could always use overlay apps like Over, or online sites like Canva.

Alright, I think I’ve covered quite a lot of things, but here are some more links to help you out:

Hope this has been helpful to any potential/existing studyblrs! Don’t hesitate to contact any studyblr for further questions, and if any of you have other tips, feel free to add them below.

To me, August is all about stars. I love watching the night sky far away from the light pollution at my aunt’s summer cottage, wishing upon stars when the Perseid meteor shower occurs, and trying to recognize the constellations, but only finding the “Big Dipper” :D. Redrawing the star map was crazy, but hey, I’ve learned something and I kinda like the result :D (although it’s definitely not accurate). Make sure to look at the summer night sky, it’s marvelous! 🌠

10+1 FREE APPS FOR STUDENTS — a selection of all my favorite study/health-related apps, for those who prefer digital over paper and gel pens

DISCLAIMER! Unfortunately, not every app is available both for Android and iOS so, since I own an Android phone, I tried and searched for alternatives on the App Store. Sorry for the inconvenience!

  1. KHAN ACADEMY (google play / app store) — Can’t understand integral calculus? Want to learn more on Polynesian art? This app is full of explanations in math, chemistry, history, economics and even more. You can also practice with quizzes and works offline too. And it’s free. You’re welcome.
  2. MY STUDY LIFE (google play / app store) — This has to be my #1 app for scheduling and planning your study. You can add tasks, exams, manage your classes and you can set notifications on for literally anything. Hands down the best free digital planner.
  3. FILL THAT BULLET (google play / app store “dupe”) — If you’d like a digital version of the bullet journal, look no further. It’s very basic, not so customizable, but it works.
  4. WORDREFERENCE (google play / app store) — I’ve already mentioned it in my Italian masterpost, it’s my all-time favorite dictionary. The only downside is that it doesn’t work offline...
  5. FOREST (google play / app store 1.99$) — You saw that coming, it’s the most famous app for productivity. It freezes your phone for a limited time so you’re actually getting sh*t done.
  6. YOGA FITNESS (google play / app store “dupe”) — This isn’t a necessity, but I wanted to include a simple yoga app bc it helps with stress and health in general. Yoga Fitness has all the poses divided by benefit and I think that’s genious.
  7. SLEEPYTIME (google play / app store “dupe”) — For a goodnight’s sleep, knowing how much you should actually sleep is essential. Having an app comes handy when there is no wifi and the website sleepyti.me (which I already mentioned in my previous post) isn’t working.
  8. SLEEP SOUNDS (google play / app store “dupe”) — I wanted to add a sleep-inducing app bc lately I’ve been having trouble sleeping. Some people like to listen to their own music playlists, but nature sounds are def good too.
  9. WATER DRINK REMINDER (google play / app store “dupe”) — Keeping your body hydrated is hard when you’re busy studying economics... but you really should be drinking water! This app helped me a lot when I used to drink 500ml or less per day. Very complete and useful.
  10. BLISS (google play / app store “dupe” 2.99$) — With a positive, healthy mind you’ll benefit more from your study sessions. These exercises will improve your life in general. Recommended.
  11. ONCE (google playapp store) — And for all my uterus-owners out there, here’s the best period-tracking app I’ve ever tried tbh. Honestly, there’s nothing worse than getting your period unexpectedly on the day of your exam.

back to school prep during summer

look at those kids they’re ready to go back to school lucky smol children

hello there! So, if it’s summer where you are, you’re probably going crazy buying new school supplies (tbh it’s like my favorite thing to do no kiddings), but there’s plenty of other stuff to do so you can get ready for the new school year

  • Plan ur stuff

Well, I love myself some good planning. Before you go buy supplies, plan out every single one of your classes. By that, I mean thinking about what you’re going to do to study as effectively as possible for each class. For example, rewriting your notes the day before the next class, or keeping a seperate notebook with all the vocab you learned. I like to have two notebooks for each class, one for taking notes in class and one that I keep at home, where I rewrite all my notes. Well planned is half done.

  • Get on top of those habits yo

Summer is a great time to get on top of those habits you lost during finals! Start a habit tracker to motivate yourself, so you can start the school year without having to worry about your habits.

  • Work ahead!

This is probably the nerdiest one here, but work ahead if you can. If you know you’re going to get a super busy schedule after summer(like meee), try to see if there’s a way for you to already start learning the new material. This will really save you some time later in the year. You don’t need to spend hours a day doing this, please don’t. Please enjoy your summer.

  • Review that shit

So, review doesn’t work for every class, but for some classes it’s vital. Language classes really need you to be up-to-date on your vocab and grammar. Luckily, your teachers will probably expect no one to do any work during summer, so they’ll spend some time reviewing. If you get ahead and do a little work during summer, you can save time there too! Again, it doesn’t need to be intensive, just go over like 10-15 words a day and maybe one or two grammar concepts. The point is to keep your mind used to the language.

  • Get your sleep schedule on point

Obviously you’re gonna stay up until 3 am watching some show on Netflix. It’s summer, go ahead. Just make sure that the week before school, you start going to sleep and waking up like you would for a schoolday. Your body will have to adjust, but by the time school starts your body will be used to it.

That’s all! I hope you guys found this helpful, and have a good summer :)

xx Marga

with the start of the new school year, i figured that i should make myself a post on the things that i want to keep in mind for the new school year :’) these are just a couple of reminders, a few goals, and a few resolutions that i want to remember. some of this is personal ; some of this is more general, but i felt like this would be a more solid way to commit. i want to solve a few problems i ran into last year and improve myself and make sure that i can be the best that i can be. i hope that everybody else’s first day of school was fantastic as well!

  • be positive and respectful and polite and kind, be a ball of sunshine, be the kind of person who puts smiles on other people’s faces
  • get along with my teachers and my classmates
  • my health is more important than my grades. this includes my mental health as well.
  • get enough sleep!!
  • stay hydrated!!
  • eat healthier foods to fuel my brain
  • don’t let negativity and fear hold me back
  • don’t spent too much time on social media!!
  • take the time to enjoy myself
  • take more time to listen to what others have to say
  • start on assignments as soon as possible and stop the cycle of procrastination
  • stay balanced and stay on top of things
  • keep on reviewing past material
  • work hard throughout the school year
  • listen to my own advice
  • it’s okay to ask as many questions as you need
  • try to speak up more in class
  • spend more time on the difficult things instead of avoiding them
  • focus on efficiency
  • study aesthetic is not helpful if i spend more time on it than actually learning and remembering
  • be yourself
  • don’t compare yourself to others

[9.4.16]

I’m patiently waiting for my highlighters to run out so I can switch back to my trusty ol’ Mildliners

does anyone else feel like conserving them as much as possible or is that just me?

That’s it! I’m sorry, I feel like this blog is always on hiatus for some reason but I’m going on vacation for the whole month of august. With no wi-fi.

↓ MORE INFO ↓

  • No queue this time! As I said in my previous post, July has been a pretty intense month and I had no time to set up a queue, unfortunately.
  • I originally intended to close submissions AND the inbox but, on second thought, I decided to leave the latter open due to the fact that my birthday is on the 4th August, so if you want to send me happy bday messages, I’ll gladly read them and reply once I’m back from my vacation ❤

Stay fresh and may august be nice to you, Seru ⚡

The past month has been so intense I forgot to tell you guys I’ve been to the “David Bowie Is” exhibition last tuesday!! I managed to take 3-4 pics (before the operator told me it was forbidden lmao) and the one on the right is the only decent one, but I like it.  The exhibition was SO good oh my god. I had high expectations but I’ve never imagined it would be so amazing, I was blown away! Definitely recommended.

(Btw, I bought the Aladdin Sane cookie @ Cafe Zanarini, I swear it was DB all over Bologna...!!)

I was very inspired by a post by @studybowie about nutrition and decided to write it out in one of my notebooks! It definitely helps with staying on track and keeping my body in tip-top shape! 🍎

😍 this is lovely!!

Anonymous asked:

if i just watched a tv show ive already seen except with italian audio and italian/english subtitles, would that improve my italian? its difficult to understand what theyre actually saying and to break up the words, but would even listening to their italian (while knowing whats happening in the show bc of seeing it before) help me? i used duolingo and memrise before and i know basics but idk like the majority of the vocab being used in the show

I think the “level” of the tv show plays a crucial role in this. If you’re watching a show w/ a refined vocab it will be harder to understand the subs (even if you know the original scripts). Try watching the subbed version of a show you’ve already seen and you know the scripts don’t include complicated words. Also, I know it’s a pain in the ass, but you’ll have to stop and search for the meaning of every unknown term your run into (wordreference is recommended)

I hope this helped! If u find that tv shows are too much for u atm, try listening to italian songs and compare lyrics and english translation!
