Voidstar's finally public!

It only took 3 years longer than I originally planned but the first 6 pages are finally public! There's pages currently scheduled to go up weekly until November, they're going to be going up every Sunday 11am AEST (Saturday 6pm PDT for those in the US)
I've also made the webcomic pages their own blog page here on Tumblr in case I forget to update the page links or share it here, so they'll be easy to find week-to-week
I made a conlang (fictional language) for Voidstar and have been going over it and tidying it up a bit because it’s going to start appearing more prominently in some of the upcoming pages. Turns out I probably should have done this WAY earlier because by my own rules, I’ve been misspelling 2 out of 3 of my main character’s names, one of which is already in the comic and all the pages are queued to post, so it’s too late to change anything 🤦
Technically Xari should be spelled Xāri and Ravu should be Rāvū. I know it’s my fictional language and I made the rules but I’m going to know it’s wrong and it’s going to annoy me 😂
I finally made the switch fully from windows over to Linux last month and have been getting comfortable with it since. Im still sorting out bugs as they show up but im really enjoying it so far!
That being said I did crash the entire user interface yesterday by incorrectly installing a font so I’ve still got a bit to learn 😅
I’m doing final edits on some of the scripts for the early chapters of Voidstar and I’m running hard into issues with some of the dialogue around how other people react to Xari’s amputation. One of the things I really wanted to show in Voidstar early on is that this isn’t one of those sci-fi settings where everyone and their dog (often literally) has “robot limbs”. even with better tech, Xari is still disabled and people, by and large, still say weird shit to you when you’re disabled.
But even direct quotes of things people have said to me irl, in the context of a story, read like weird “Mary-sue” dialogue 😂. One example that I’m currently trying to fix near the end of chapter 1 is literally word for word a recreation of a conversation I had with a shop keeper not long after moving back home. She asked what happened to my legs (while I was trying to do math so I could, you know, pay her btw) and when I told her some quick made up story so I could go back to counting she started gushing about how brave I was and how it was amazing that I’m still getting out and about. Irl, it was weird and uncomfortable and I’m trying to convey that feeling to readers but any time I put it (or similar interactions) in a story it reads like that thing that a lot of authors do to tell the reader how awesome and humble their characters are.

When Xari finds a mysterious stone floating among the asteroids of their home space station, they never expected it to result in them becoming one of the most wanted criminals in all of the Pelexat galaxy. With the help of the former planetary explorer, Wev, Xari and the newly hatched living-god, Ravu, must go on the run to avoid Ravu becoming a weapon in the brewing political power struggles of the Kepek Commonwealth empire. Together, the trio will have to carve out their own place in the cosmos, and unravel the secrets long thought lost to the galaxy.

I've been working on this series for so long and I'm so excited to finally have everything up and ready to go!
I decided to make the comic it's own dedicated blog so it's easier to find the pages in order. This post is also going to be pinned there and act as an intro and table of contents.
I'm going to be releasing the first 6 pages on the 31st, and after that it'll be 1 page per week
I only recently heard about the revisions to the pathfinder 2e rules and lore and it made me want to re-make one of my old characters, Migli for the new ruleset, which means I had to redraw her too! Not much about her changed visually except for the fact she has wings now, but the new ruleset did change a lot about her lore-wise and mechanically, which just made me want to play her again! Poor Migli, I’ve played her so many times and every game ends/group disbands before she manages to figure out wtf is going on with her curse 😂. See, I can draw humanoids sometimes! I was playing Subnautica and got the idea for a mermaid OC. Not sure what her name will be yet (I’m open to suggestions) but I’m really happy with how this turned out! I think page 25 of Voidstar might actually be cursed. At this rate I’m scared I’m going to give AO3 fic writers a run for their money with the luck I’m having lmao
Every other page has taken me like a week tops, but every time I sit down to work on this one something goes wrong. Last month it was planned power outages we somehow missed the notifications for. Annoying but meh, that was on us. Then I had a flairup for a week. Then I had to get a mole removed and checked, it wasn’t anything bad thankfully but the wound got infected, which caused another flare up that caused me to sleep for nearly 48hrs straight, then I got better and my tablet started overheating, found a replacement for it until the weather improves, then today, literally as soon as I started working on the page, our electricity started randomly cutting out 🙃
I called my dad (who built the house and did the wiring for it) and we found the cause but it’s not something I can fix even with him directing me, it’s an issue for an actual electrician and he’s out of the state for 2 weeks. We also can’t call a different electrician because we honestly can’t afford it at the best of times but because of the fuel shortages a lot of on-call businesses have had to raise their prices.
On the plus side, my parents house (we live in a seperate house on the same property) runs on solar as part of a different circuit…system thingy (case in point of why I shouldn’t be fixing the problem lol) so it’s not effected by the fault. mum ran an extension cord over so we can steal their electricity, so at least our essentials like the fridge can stay on and we won’t loose our food. But that has to take priority over my laptop or tablet.
at this point it’s stopped being frustrating and it’s just really funny. The universe really doesn’t want me to finish this damn comic page I swear 😂
One of the really annoying by things about Gen AI getting popular (aside from all the obvious, really bad things) is that almost all of the Text-To-Speech tools I used to use before the AI boom have now been replaced with gen AI voices. TTS had been around for decades and while they didn’t always sound the greatest, and there were the occasional ethical issues with individual ones (eg the Tik Tok TTS pre-2021 being made with stolen audio clips) there were always other, easily accessible options out there that were ethical.
Now though, almost every easily usable one I’ve been able to find uses gen AI. And it sucks, because it was a genuinely helpful accessibility tool, even outside of its original use as a screen reader. A lot of blind users on Tik Tok talked about how nice it was to have it so easily available because it meant more creators used it and it made the platform more accessible for them. I also used to use it on days were I couldn’t record audio for my videos and it allowed me to still make my videos during illness flareups, extended verbal shutdowns, or even just when there was noise I couldn’t get away from to record. I also know a lot of trans people who liked using it too because their voices pre-transition made them dysphoric. It made the process of video content creation way easier on a lot of folks I knew and it’s so frustrating that now so many ethical options are just gone.
Arayan is another old OC that I felt needed some love. He’s Kiesse’s brother and while he’s still in her story, his role has changed drastically. In the current iteration of the story, he’s a close ally to Kiesse, a quiet bookworm who just never took to the lifestyle expected of his family of loud, proud warriors. In older versions though, he was a warrior who’d seen too much too young, causing him to develop DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). In a bit of an ironic twist, I was diagnosed with OSDD (Other Specified Dissociative Disorder) at the end of last year, which is in the same family as DID, and I would have likely never figured it out if it wasn’t for Arayan and the research I did into DID/OSDD for his character. So, it felt kind of… fitting to draw him while I figure all this out. Every now and then I forget my dad has a Tik Tok account and follows me. I just got notified that he saw my video talking about my OSDD (with a brief explanation of what that means) and I’m really really hoping he doesn’t ask me follow up questions about it when he gets back from work 🙃. Dad… means well but any time my or my sister’s mental illness comes up… he wants to help, which is great, but all his advice boils down to “just dissociate, that’s what I did and I’m fine 👍” and that’s kind of the opposite of what I need to be doing right now 😂.
Tbf if he does bring it up, I have a golden opportunity. He initially refused to use they/them for me because “they/them is plural” and while he did eventually come around, if he does mention the OSDD stuff I can tell him he really has no excuse now 😂
I bet there's at least one guy who uses a wheelchair who became a sneakerhead just for the laughs. Wearing pristine bright white brand shoes like "if you let your shoes touch the ground you're a bitch. If you keep them on display and never wear them, you're a coward. I'm the only one doing this correctly. Fuck you, get on my level."
A boy I used to play wheelchair basketball with actually did this. He was specifically into basketball shoes (I don’t know the proper term for the type of shoe, I’m a double leg amputee who doesn’t wear shoes 😂). The other kids on the team used to make fun of him for spending so much money on something that has no impact on how he plays, but I don’t think he bought them because he thought they’d help, he just really really liked them. And because he was in a wheelchair he got to flex about his fancy shoes everywhere he went AND using them didn’t ruin them, even out on the crappy outdoor courts and pavement covered in mud. He got to have his cake and eat it too. Win win lol.
I’ve been playing Silksong ever since it’s release and honestly I’m surprised I’m enjoying it as much as I am. I am… not good at it lol, and I’m not usually into these kinds of difficult games, but I’m still (very very slowly) getting through it and I really am enjoying it! Despite having only played Hollow knight before Silksong’s release, there’s something about it that’s very nostalgic to me.
