DNI if you meet the Acidic DNI Criteria

The AI encyclical doesn't yet have a Latin translation, because even though the Latin version is "official", it takes six to twelve months longer to prepare than all the others, an issue exacerbated by the use of terms that don't already have established neolatin translations. Since the timing is important and they don't want to rush the Latinists, they seem to have decided a few years back to move the Latin versions "off the critical path", even though this adds a layer of absurdity to the whole business. Since the encyclicals are still issued simultaneously in like ten other languages, this leaves it uncertain which version should be considered official -- it's likely that it was first written in Italian or perhaps English, then translated, but when the Latin version finally comes out like a year from now, it will retroactively be considered the official copy, and all the others will be considered vernacular translations of it. Which is already a funny story about where pragmatism meets tradition, but in reading about this I found some commentary from someone formerly of the Vatican's Latin office, who mentioned something even better: that one benefit of this process was that the Vatican got to see the public discourse about the document while translating it, which gave them a chance to tailor it to any controversies or confusion that might arise, so that, for instance, if there were competing readings of a passage based on subtle differences between translations, they could pick which one to favour after the fact. This means that this is sort of like Steam Early Access for papal encyclicals.

Maybe they should give the translators access to Claude in order to speed up the process a bit.

one of my dwarves successfully killed a bronze colossus, so i asked another dwarf to make a bronze statue of him, hoping the subject matter would relate to the killing of that bronze colossus, but um

instead, the sculptor made a statue of the colossus slayer's wife leaving him

Thinking of doing a bit that’s making a series of tumblr polls about a post I should make like “what should the first letter of the post be” “what should the second letter of the post be” etc. etc. and then finally making that post. But it would be so long and obnoxious that I don’t actually want to do it. But please imagine I did and be appropriately eye-rolly at me

Tumblr is an autoregressive model that only knows one phrase, and it starts with K

I've had this comment in my brain for years and I have to remind myself it's never been a well known thing and i cant reference it and expect anyone to know what im talking about

The International Phonetic Alphabet consonants found in English, with keywords and relevant parts of the mouth highlighted and colour-coded. (Source.)

Pronouncing each of these in sequence is a very strange and amusing physical sensation, and I highly recommend it.

haha look it’s where those noises live in your dang FACE, TRY IT

Very helpful actually

I understand that 1st year linguistics lectures involve making all these noises

I do not want to be a dick about GD&T but as i understand it there is a MASSIVE difference between "this is a 10mm profile tolerance defined relative to the centerline of the part" and "this is a 10mm profile tolerance defined relative to one edge of the part". like the former lets the sides of your part move twice as much

Maybe life's different in CMM world but i also find that inspection technicians really don't like it when you ask them to sit one jaw of the micrometer on a dotted line that doesn't exist IRL

lmao I am sure that they do not. and I feel like it is bad drawing practice to dimension to a centerline unless it's really unavoidable

in this particular situation the problem could have been solved by making the datum one side and doubling the profile tolerance to a 20mm profile (to match what is apparently being built...) but having to put a 20 mm profile on a part starts making people go 🤨 whereas disguising it as a 10mm profile tolerance to the centerline looks less bad lol

Should people not be going 🤨 to a part that isn't within 10mm of nominal? Sure, if it's not going to cause any problems then Use As Is or Concess it or whatever whatever your system calls it but you ought to have the record-keeping and the conversations with the manufacturer about why it happened and how not to let the same thing re-occur on a tighter dimension.

  • @combat-epistemologist has been getting into nonalcoholic cocktails lately
  • last night they made alcohol free old fashioneds for everyone at craft night who wanted them
  • i asked for a "new fangled", as a bit
  • they have now passed this request along to. our mutual friend claude anthropic

you've heard of

now get ready for Cognitive Cocktails With Chef Claude

So I think Claude just hallucinated an entire cocktail

lapsang souchong steeping live in our kitchen rn

Can you really sub between mezcal/liquid smoke smoke and lapsang smoke?

The former are done with hardwoods like Oak or Mesquite whereas the latter uses pine. Or do the terpenoids help to achieve the aromatic profile from the missing angostura bitters?

I took a shower today and thought about how incredibly lucky I am to live in an era where I could have hot water whenever I wanted it. I'd been taking indoor plumbing for granted.

I started feeling this way after reading The Road to Wigan Pier, about the efforts of the coal miners to keep clean. I assume they had plumbing, but Orwell mentions they have to heat the water

It wasn't until 1970 or so that ensuring every household had its own indoor toilet became a priority for government. Plenty of working-class boomers grew up with a shared outhouse.

Bathing would have been done in a big bucket/trough filled up with pots of water heated on the stove.

In the 30s, mines were increasingly installing bath/shower blocks for the miners. Pwll Mawr in Wales got one a couple of years after Wigan Pier was written. These were generally funded through a tax levied on coal rather than being paid for by the mining companies.

it's important to have your own unique door knock so people know it's you. a knock consists of stressed knocks, unstressed knocks and silences. as the creator of this system and thus the first person to note down my knock, i will claim the knock consisting of only silences (it's a zero-based index). Now would you please answer the door

But *how many* silences does it consist of? How do I know it is you, rather than somebody who refrains from knocking on the door a different number of times?

This CT clamp project is becoming the kind of weird that has me standing on a ladder with an oscilloscope so. Maybe putting that off for a bit.

I've discovered that my energy meter has a little red light that flashes for ever 0.1Wh that passes through it and you can get little battery powered ZigBee things that sit on top of that light and read it so I might just do that, really accurate and much easier than fussing with a finicky CT and ADC calibration inside my tiny distribution box and I'm pretty sure no one would notice a little data parasite sitting on the meter.

also it looks like my apartment might have partial three-phase service? Maybe for the induction hob?

...my stove can power meter itself and tell you how much power it used in the last session? I gotta read manuals more often.

I feel like for some people getting this report would make them anxious or obsessive but it's great for me because cooking uses so much less energy than you think, it always feels like winning. Like wow I made this huge batch of noodles and soup and it was like 0.8kWh? That's 25¢ of electricity, a price difference you absorb in "bought a slightly smaller sweet potato at the store" incidents.

also unless you're on gas heating, running all appliances is free if you would otherwise be running the radiators harder
