Generally, caregivers offer companionship, safety supervision, and assistance with daily activities in the comfort of the person's home. At home senior caregivers assist with caregiver duties such as helping seniors to move safely around their home, provide social and emotional support, assist with different degrees of personal care (bathing, dressing, or feeding), and help with meal preparations or light housekeeping. They can also help your loved one with medication reminders, and some can even drive them to run errands or to doctor appointments.
How much does it cost to hire an in-home caregiver 2026?
The average rate for hiring a private, at home senior caregiver on Care.com as of February, 2026 is $21.14 per hour. This cost will fluctuate depending on your location, the caregiver's level of experience, whether the care is full-time or part-time and the duties your senior caregiver needs to perform. If you want to hire a live in caregiver, this can also impact costs.
How can I find a good caregiver?
Looking for a senior caregiver to care for an elderly parent or loved one can be an overwhelming task. To make the process easier, start by outlining what you'd like from a candidate before starting your caregiver search. Think about the level of experience you wish them to have, the tasks that they would need to perform, and how much are you able to pay.
To start the search process on Care.com, you will first need to create an account by answering a few simple questions to find caregivers that match your individual needs. You will then have the option to either post a job and receive applications from candidates, or search for caregivers on the platform based on years of experience, hourly rate, availability, services provided, distance from your area, etc. After you have selected your candidates, you can schedule interviews, check references, request additional background checks and hire the caregiver that best fits your needs.
Are private caregivers background checked?
Yes, caregivers on Care.com are asked to complete an annual background check called a CareCheck. Senior caregivers who complete this background check will have a badge on their profile displaying the date it was run. While CareCheck is a good start, we strongly recommend that you follow some additional steps for hiring a caregiver for seniors safely, which include interviewing candidates, checking references, and running your own background check. What is the role of a caregiver?
Most in-home caregivers help seniors with their daily tasks while keeping them company. In general, they can help them get around the house safely, prepare meals, clean the house and give medication reminders.
