friend-dogor asked:

hi! not sure if you've ever gotten asked this, but in fandom sections of tumblr there's a term called "spam likes" where a single person goes through all your post history and enthusiastically likes Every Individual Post You've Made.

because of the way notifications are grouped up, a hundred likes from different people on the same post might get lumped into one notification, which is beautiful and simple and easy to read,

but, if one singular person likes a LOT of your posts, it can blow up your whole activity feed, since each will register as an individual notification—a lot of times, people who like posts like this will get blocked for being "annoying" and making it so that the blog owner can't see their friends interacting in their feed.

as somebody mildly annoyed when this happens to my blog, but who doesn't block people for doing that, i want to know:

could it ever be possible to create a notification for, say, a single individual liking more than 10 of your posts in, idk, a day or something? i think it would both clean up the activity feed for a lot of people, and would give a new funny metric for something like. idk, "@yourbestestfriend liked 437 of your posts" i think notifs like that would be funny instead of frustrating.

Answer: Hello, @friend-dogor!

Thanks for your question. We love this idea! It’s a great suggestion, so we will look into it and see what’s possible. It could make a good candidate for the next Hack Day—we’ll keep you posted.

If we have updates, you’ll find them here at @wip or at @changes. Stayed tuned, and keep your suggestions coming.

Disabling likes.

Hey, folks! We’ve received numerous questions about disabling likes as a way of forcing people to reblog, so we thought we would put this answer together before WIP takes a short break over the holidays.

Unfortunately, we don’t think we would ever add an option to control likes in the same way we have the option to control reblogs and replies on normal Tumblr blogs. Likes serve an extremely important function as a way for us to understand how to recommend content to others—and it very much affects those algorithms that help power the For You feed, the “Because you liked…” recommendations, and how we sort posts in search results. People engaging with a post in any way—liking, reblogging, replying, Blazing, following—can help boost that post to people who haven’t seen it before.

However, we did make the conscious decision not to include likes in our new Communities feature and instead focus on comments. We may revisit that, but the idea with communities speaks to a need you’re talking about—the desire to have a known group of people who will appreciate your work, instead of throwing it out there to the void and hoping people see it.

We hope you try that out and see if it helps here! Thanks for your question.

kurt-dontcry asked:

Hi dear Tumblr team I have a suggestion.

Have you ever thought about making comments likeable? To maybe show that you share the same opinion as someone or to simply show appreciation.

Maybe making it a bit special when the Creator of the post likes one of the comments.

I feel like this might be something that could be added

(*^^*)

Answer: Hello, @kurt-dontcry!

We like this idea. We like this idea a lot, even.

We like it so much, in fact, we have already given ample consideration and would love to do it. First, though, we’re working on making replies "threadable,“ so you can respond to specific comments. After we get that rolled out, we may come back to the idea of being able to like or react to specific comments in the notes—and certainly hope to bring this one to fruition.

Thanks for your question, and fingers crossed here. Have a good day.

fandom--collector asked:

Will there at any point be an option for mass deleting likes, either all at once or by date or tags? I am aware there's an outside computer extension that can be used for this, but as someone who only logs in on my phone, I was wondering about through the mobile app.

Answer: Hello, @fandom–collector!

There are no plans to include a function to mass-unlike posts, sorry. But there are some small workarounds, however—your best bet is a third-party extension or writing a tool that uses our API! We hope this might be of some use.

Thanks for your question, and have a lovely day.

is-this-just-fantasy asked:

Can we make it so liked posts don't disappear when the og is deleted? This technically already is a thing for reblogs of a deleted post since they count as "new posts"

Maybe instead make it so we can't reblog or comment on a deleted post we liked?

Also search bars in the likes section!

Answer: Hey there, @is-this-just-fantasy!

So, when a user deletes their account, we ensure that all instances of their original posts are removed. If you liked the original post, that would mean it will no longer appear in the list of posts you liked.

That said, we do not remove reblogs—so if you liked a reblog of that post, it would remain in your list of posts you liked regardless of the original account’s status.

As for search bars in Likes, we must say that it’s never been on the roadmap. Likes aren’t really intended to be a searchable archive (after all, that’s what reblogs are for!)

Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate it!

Posts are too popular? Worry not. Consider your notifications covered.

Sound familiar?

Broken the internet with a post? We love that for you. What we love a little less is the barrage of likes and reblogs you have probably received. This can be a little intense. A bit much. Stressful, even. And unnecessarily so.

If your post has gone stratospheric, but you don’t want to completely mute notifications for it, we are working on something that might just help. We are experimenting with grouping your push notifications from anyone you don’t follow into neat, occasional summaries. This will roll out to a small number of you, first as an A/B test, for a limited time.

image

Why are we doing this?

We hope to steady, streamline, and calm your Tumblr experience when you’re grappling with overwhelming notifications from a popular post or reblog. The goal here is to reduce overload so you can receive the notifications you care about the most—while keeping up to speed with everything else.

In July, you may remember that we turned on post-level muting on the web. We also extended muting to affect your activity feed, as well as your push notifications. This feature is the next step in managing notification overload—one that will make your devices a little more peaceful and, hopefully, work a little more proactively against the problem.

Feedback?

We’re all ears. Let us know what you think in the replies—we would love to hear from you. And we will be back in touch with updates on this test in the near future.

bloosketch-deactivated20231217 asked:

Hello!

I'm doing a deep dive into my 11k+ likes. Is there an easier way than using the down/end key to scroll all the way down to my first likes? I've only managed to make the page unresponsive and I'm nowhere near the end. Is there anything in the works to search likes?

Thank you!

Answer: Hey, @bloosketch!

Unfortunately no, there is no work planned for the Likes view at this time. We love the Likes view ourselves, and want to work on it—especially to add functionality like searching and organizing Likes. But it’s just not a priority yet, and it is unlikely this will change anytime soon either. But there is one thing you can do, and it’s pretty nifty.

This one neat trick you can try on web is to simply turn off Endless Scrolling on your dashboard preferences. From here, go to the Likes page and hit Next at the bottom for the next page, and you will see the URL update like this: https://www.tumblr.com/likes?before=1458768134.

That last number is a unix timestamp. You can put any unix timestamp there, and it will jump back to that period in time. So, if you know when your first likes were made, you could just jump all the way back to that time via the URL.

We hope this helps. Have a great day!

senzasord asked:

I feel like it needs to be pointed out that the new feature that explicitly tells people you’ve liked a post as part of recommending it could potentially out a lot of queer people. I know when I was closeted I liked a bunch of lgbtqia+ related posts, and I would not have felt safe doing that if I knew one of those posts could potentially be seen by someone else with my username attached to it. I also like a lot of my mutuals’ personal posts, which would be inappropriate to be algorithmically presented to other people due to them being about their lives, or mental health etc.

I know you guys are weirdly focussed on generating likes (tumblr works on reblogs, not likes, but I understand there’s a disconnect between how the users use this site and how you think it should be used that seems to be driving a lot of these awful changes), but I think this feature will actively dissuade people from liking posts - and since that’s something you want people to do, it would be in your best interests to consider how you’re actively working against your own goal with this feature.

Just something to think about.

Answer: Hello @senzasord!

Thank you for raising this with us, first of all.

We hope we bring good news for you and anyone else concerned by this issue. If you have your likes hidden, we won’t show the username with the recommendation.

And it’s exceedingly simple to do. You can toggle this feature off either at this link or by selecting “Blog settings” in the right navigation from your blog.

See the screenshot below for the button you want to toggle.

nanobreaker asked:

Hello! A quick question: it used to be possible to skip through our Likes by adding something like / page / 10 after the Likes' URL. Is there a new shortcut for jumping through our Likes? I found the old system really useful for setting up queues and organising my blog; unfortunately, the grids on the Likes page take a long time to go through and therefore aren't quite as effective. Thank you!

Answer: Hey, @kittykittyhunter!

Good(ish) news here. If you disable Endless Scrolling in your dashboard preferences, you will see that the URL to your Likes list updates every time you go to the next page.

The “before” value there is a number, specifically a Unix timestamp. For example, 1688242570 is July 1st, 2023, at 20:16:10 GMT.

You can use a tool like this to pick a date and time you want to go back to in your likes. This is the closest thing we have available right now to what you’re asking for, but we hope this helps.

Thanks for your question, and have a great day!

Heya Wip team! something ive hoped to see for years is the ability to view our likes in the style that we can view our blog archives - that big wide format make finding posts so easy + the ability to search by year|month|format, any chance of a likes overhaul? have a lovely day!(˶‵◡‵˶)ノ✧

Answer: Hey there, @0-000000!

Yeah, now that is a really cool idea! It would also be fairly possible for technical reasons regarding the API that we will not bore you with, here.

What we can say is that we will look into it. However, we’re afraid to say we can’t make any promises. Watch this space.

Thanks for your feedback, and keep it coming!
