If Fate Is What Defines Us (AO3)
Summary:
Fate. It felt like fate. When he put to bed all that grief. Stumbled upon all that hope. Serendipity. That they’d been that close. That section of the woods. That time, that day. Destiny. What else would they call it? They found each other without trying. Everything had been so… easy.
Ed could still picture it. The creature soft and slow between his sheets. Then fresh from a morning shower, skin bare as Ed applied another set of bandages. Then under the glow of the city lights, singing and hollering the lullaby at the top of its lungs. Making a sandwich in the kitchen. Demanding his phone number at the breakfast table. Leaning against his side.
Heart pounding. Breath heaving. It was enough. Stomach churning, palms sweating. Just to have known him. Jaw clenching, eyes closing. To be known by him.
That’s what this was all for, wasn’t it? Someone to think about. Something to wish for. One last sweet memory. Somebody to live for.
