I’m the founder of a small fine leather goods brand. We import leather from Italy and France and hand-make our products in San Salvador, El Salvador. Some of our products are sold in physical stores, but we also sell online.

What challenge were you trying to address with ROOTS INC?

We wanted our products to have better online exposure so that we could begin shipping to customers in North and Central America.

What was the scope of their involvement?

We had several initial meetings with ROOTS to define the structure of the website. We shared our ideas and showed examples of what we liked, while they made several design proposals as well. Our marketing agency provided ROOTS with all of the content and information that needed to go on the website such as product photos, descriptions, and prices. 

ROOTS then moved into actual development. Their team created a product customization feature where users could choose the color, thread, lining, and monogram for a certain product. They tied this in with the product cart so that the price automatically updates based on the customizations made. 

We also asked them to integrate Wompi, a payment processing system powered by a Colombian bank named Banco Agricola.

I met five people from their team, and that included Miguel (Project Manager) and Roberto (Account Manager). 

How did you come to work with ROOTS INC?

Our digital marketing agency recommended that we put up an e-commerce website to grow our business. They named three companies that we could work with, and we clicked with ROOTS right away. 

They were simply a good match for us in terms of their vision. They also had the flexibility to fine-tune the little details without extra charge, which is what we wanted. We liked that ROOTS was very conscious about their pricing, especially since we’re a small organization.

How much have you invested with them?

We paid $400 upfront and $4,000 more over the course of 24 months. 

What is the status of this engagement?

The project started in September 2021, and the website was launched in December 2021. Our contract is ongoing, and they are still helping us maintain and modify the website as needed.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

We’re very satisfied with their work. I’m an architect and I’m really meticulous when it comes to the appearance of things, but they’ve exceeded my expectations when it came to the graphic design work.

How did ROOTS INC perform from a project management standpoint?

ROOTS has been very proactive in guiding us, especially during the early stages. They’ve helped us gather ideas from similar websites and look for the best payment system for our e-commerce platform. They’ve met every deadline since, sometimes even delivering 2–3 weeks ahead of time. The only delay we’ve experienced was due to us not delivering pictures in the specific format that they needed.

We communicate via Zoom, WhatsApp, email, and phone calls.

What did you find most impressive about them?

They work really fast. That’s their strongest point. 

Are there any areas they could improve?

There were a few occasions where they used highly technical language that we couldn’t understand. Perhaps they explain things in laymen’s terms, especially to people who are not tech-savvy.

Especially if you’re not tech-savvy, make sure to ask them about their specific deliverables, because their initial presentation of their services will only touch on some very general points.

We needed a team to develop the frontend of a language platform.

We worked with three developers and one project manager. The negotiations took place with the commercial manager, so there were five people working with us in total.

Our UX/UI designer had worked with them in the past, so they were referred to us.

What is the status of this engagement?

We worked with the between June–November 2021 on this project, and we’re currently working on improvements and new functionalities. We’ve also begun a new project with their team, so we have an ongoing collaboration.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?

They’ve met all requirements and more. Their delivery times are just perfect. We’ve achieved all of our goals — they’ve even made proposals and improvements along the way so the results have been better than expected.

How did ROOTS INC perform from a project management standpoint?

Their communication is always fluid — everything works well and all deadlines have been met. They use Trello and Asana as project management tools, and Slack to communicate.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Outside of their timeliness with deadlines, their top-level quality is what I find most impressive. The quality of their work is top-level — they could work with companies anywhere in the world and meet the quality standards. They are very skilled and proficient in languages.

Their prices could be lower.

Be very clear about all of your strategies and needs. When you express your plans, they will execute them.

The main reason is to try to be more competitive, open abroad our resources and grow our technology stack. In Root Inc we found a great partner, not only for these qualified professionals but for his way to involve in the projects that joins perfectly with our principles.

We get in touch with Root’s through the social networks, where we begin to establish communication, start to work together with little projects and we found that we had great points in common such as our principles and manners of doing the work. With those reasons in mind we decided to join efforts to be bigger together and started to work more closely.

At this moment we are working together ni projects with stack’s like Python, Django and Ruby on Rails. Some of the work they are helping are the realization of Unit Testing in our Python-Django applications and maintenance of an application developed in Ruby on Rails.

Our point of contact in Root’s are Miguel and he is in charge of coordinating the work with the professionals that are assigned to us. At this moment we are working with two resources of Root Inc.

Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?

We were searching for a meticulous and systematic professional who can make the Unit Testing of our actual products, we are proud to say that, in Root’s, we found exactly what we were looking for. On the other hand, the colleague who maintains the maintenance of the application in Rubi has turned out to be an enthusiastic and decisive professional who has known how to face day-to-day incidents and provide veterancy to the maintenance team.

We use Google Meet to communicate with Root's and Trello and some other collaboratibe tools to manage the project tasks.

The enthusiasm, youth and quick response of this company were especially noteworthy to us. We like to feel that their involvement in the projects goes beyond a service as a provider. It is a pleasure to have these colleagues who add value to the team and to each project.

Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?

Developers are reliable professionals in their work area, however, they have room for improvement in the area of ​​interprofessional communication to achieve results in a more efficient way. Fortunately, this aspect is more than compensated for by the management that your manager performs as a connection point between companies.

Roots Inc was hired to support the completion of a project that was not progressing due to lack of personnel, the project is on a web and mobile platform that connects people through video calls to learn the native language, Roots support in developing the Frontend of said platform and solve various Backend issues in less than 2 days.

We already had the knowledge that the Roots team is multidisciplinary and with a passion in computer and technological development, this added to the fact that I personally know its founders, who are exceptional entrepreneurs.

 I knew that they could with the challenge that was presented to us, the factors were discipline, respect for delivery time, adequate use of technologies according to need, response times for immediate technical support.

After working with another team for 3 months that did not know how to properly use the necessary technologies, one of the achievements with Roots was that we were able to take on the project on a Friday and a day and a half later we were already delivering a functional product.

Trello by project management Telegram by communication Github for versions and Firebase for the server His style to work is structured, starting from the discussion of the need, division of stages per hour, stage to analyze the design and technologies and then start working to minimize the range of error.

I think I learned from them a better structured way of running a project, I don't think they have to improve their methodology
