Certintell recruited Softblues to build a proprietary web-based texting platform. The first deliverable was to build a system that could be used to create different "flows" of surveys, that give different resources depending on what the participant answers. This platform had to be integrated with a registered Twilio number so that when the participant texted the keyword, they would automatically be launched into this series of customized surveys. 

Softblues' team helped build this platform and all desirable deliverables. They also built a window within the platform to see and respond to incoming messages that allowed the admin to track how the user was following the survey and provide additional feedback, if needed. The admin also had the option to send surveys manually via that same window should the participant need it.

All platform features that Certintell desired were delivered by Softblues in an extremely timely manner. The platform was built exactly to our needs, and our budget allowed for some additional wanted features to be integrated as well.

They were extremely timely with project management. The Project Manager and Developer worked to deliver this platform in a relatively short amount of time allotted.

We needed help with web and app development.

What was the scope of their involvement?

Softblues continuously helps us with web and app development, so we’ve done several things together. When they joined, we already had an app. Thus, they’ve helped us maintain it and improve its features. However, they built our web portal from scratch.

For the web portal, Softblues has created a CRM system for companies so that they can add their own content and job opportunities directly to our mobile app. The portal also has an account management system, so companies can log in themselves and add said content. As for the mobile app, Softblues has helped us improve its existing features, such as the onboarding process. The technology stack has included FireCMS, React Native, and React.

We’ve worked with three different types of developers and a project manager from Softblues.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

Given that we work with Softblues on an as-needed basis, we’ve had several success metrics throughout our engagement. Overall, they’ve been very flexible to work with. We’re a small startup, so flexibility is very important for us. For example, one of our investors pulled out last minute, so we couldn’t go ahead with some of Softblues’ development work. Still, they were very supportive and helped us where they could.

How did Softblues perform from a project management standpoint?

Softblues’ project management has been very good. It took us a while to get comfortable with each other and create a good working system. However, our communication has been really good. Still, due to a small language barrier, it takes us longer to explain things and get the projects completed. We communicate via Slack and Google Meet.

What did you find most impressive about them?

Softblues is great at working with startups; they’re very flexible and patient.

Are there any areas they could improve?

It would be great if Softblues improved their understanding of our business so that they could understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. They’re very good at understanding requirements and delivering exactly what we ask them for. However, I wouldn’t rely on them for a project's ideation and strategy development.

What I found most impressive about Softblues was their level of communication. At no point in our journey with them in this project were we unclear about where they were at or if they needed anything from us. It was a seamless extension of our team.

I’m the CEO and co-founder of Parfait Software. We’re a college discovery app for students and a college recruitment platform for universities. Our goal is to make the college recruitment process easy for everyone involved. We have tools that improve discovery efficiencies and communication between students, counselors, and recruiters. 

OPPORTUNITY / CHALLENGE

What challenge were you trying to address with Softblues?

We engaged Softblues to code the frontend of two web apps. Our team had already written the mobile app and its backend, but we needed a resource to develop the frontend. 

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Softblues developed the frontend of the web apps using React.js. We gave guidelines and some wireframes, and they did their own designs from there. Our platform used the AWS stack, and they used GraphQL to connect their work to our backend. The other technologies included DynamoDB and S3. 

In terms of features and functionality, one of the web apps allowed high school counselors to add students looking for colleges. High school counselors could also use the app to create college fairs conducted at their schools. They could invite any number of colleges and students to attend those fairs. 

The other app was a college recruiter platform. It allowed colleges to manage the recruits coming through the platform. These included students that shortlisted the college, students that had chat sessions with them through the app, and students that scanned or showed interest in the college. 

What is the team composition?

We worked with around six teammates from Softblues. These included the project manager, one designer, an engineer, and a QA specialist. 

How did you come to work with Softblues?

In 2021, I consulted with another early-stage startup and helped them vet several providers, including Softblues. When it came time for us to have a resource, we decided to go with Softblues because of their professionalism and the work they’d done with the other startup. 

How much have you invested with them?

We invested around $65,000. 

What is the status of this engagement?

This project lasted from March–August 2022.

What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement? 

We’d demonstrated the app in several universities and received positive feedback from our prospective customers. The web apps looked great and professional. As a result, I was happy with the design and development that Softblues did. 

How did Softblues perform from a project management standpoint?

Softblues managed the project using Jira. Together, we established weekly goals and outlined our expectations per week. Our teams conducted weekly calls to manage the project, though there was a period when we did daily standups. That was a more interactive process, but once we started to develop the product, we switched to weekly calls with the developers and the project manager. 

To communicate, we heavily relied on Slack. There was an eight-hour difference between our teams, so we used Slack to overcome timezone challenges. It worked well, and we had joint channels where we had general communications about technical questions and conversations. We also used Google Meet for online video chats. 

What did you find most impressive about them?

They gave us great suggestions and feedback. The team didn’t simply depend on us to tell them what to do. Instead, they came to us with a lot of great ideas on how they could work in terms of design and development.

Moreover, Softblues wasn’t only trying to get their work done fast — they wanted to get their work done right. On top of that, their communication was always excellent, which was great for us. 

Overall, they handled everything professionally. They were consistent and didn’t swap or switch developers in the middle of a project, unlike other companies. As a result, our work continuity was great throughout the engagement — they were a well-run organization.

No, there weren’t any.

Be ready for Softblues because they’re truly fast and efficient. Make sure you have your requirements in order. The more detailed your documents are, the faster the project will go.

We’ve been working on an e-commerce project for one of our international clients. Last year, we needed to assemble a team of high-level experts in Vue.js technology quickly. We are then verifying the candidates by pre-evaluation video tests and inviting the right candidates for the interviews. After the successful interview, we are quickly setting up the paperwork with Softblues and onboard the developer.

I can confirm that the company’s hiring process is very effective, and they find the relevant talents really quickly. Most candidates they introduced, demonstrated a high level of professional and interpersonal skills.

It was truly an example of good communication. Always honest, transparent and success oriented. We've been able to discuss the hardest topics and find a good outcome for both companies.

The entire SoftBlues team is located in Ukraine and the team remained engaged throughout 2022 and was always in touch and provided quality support for our company.

In some cases, we lacked more detailed testing of candidates on the part of SoftBlues, but in general, after the transition to automatic tests on our part, this issue was mostly resolved.

The best I like about Softblues is its budget-oriented approach. As we are working on a contract basis and Softblues helps me only with specific technologies for our client's project - budget is always important - it allows us to deliver the best solution for every client within the deadline.

Softblues provided a dedicated project manager for our company which helped us to manage all tasks and teams. They are using Slack and Jira for very convenient communication, and their weekly reports enable us to be constantly updated about the projects' statuses.

Softblues is a Ukraine-based company, and it was imposing that even after the war started, they were responsive as usual. All the developers and team members showed perfect performance.

Softblues is a Javascript-oriented company, and sometimes we need different solutions with Java or Magento, for example. I would like them to scale their team and range of technologies soon to provide even more valuable solutions.

It's that they are always in touch. When we were close to the deadlines, SoftBlues were even willing to work overtime. And in general, it's that they don't just do their job; they also always think about the end user. And the best result is achieved in a constructive conversation with them.

At the initial stage, the project did not have a clear scope of work, so it took some time to get the ball rolling. The initial project estimation took a considerable amount of time. Although, it was necessary in order to provide the accurate time frame and do budget estimation.
