The project focused on improving the mobile app experience for stylists using SalonScale, a backbar and color cost management platform. The goal was to increase usability, efficiency, and adoption among stylists by reducing friction during in-session logging, improving clarity around product usage and costs, and ensuring the mobile experience supported real salon workflows.

Stylists rely on the mobile app during fast-paced service appointments, so the project prioritized speed, accuracy, and ease of use. The work combined strategic UX evaluation, qualitative user research, competitive analysis, and hands-on design exploration to identify issues and deliver validated, actionable solutions:

What were the measurable outcomes from the project that demonstrate progress or success?

This project was broken down into milestones that had deadlines to meet. At each phase we would work with our customer success team to get feedback and do any updates as needed. Based on the feedback there may need a couple more revisions before we could move onto the next milestone.

Durran was very timely with their updates and took feedback very well. If there was any changes needed they took the feedback and got the changes done quickly and would often give a couple options to review.

We would have 2 scheduled sessions each week. These would be remote meetings through Google Meet where we would review the work done and go over any feedback and next steps. We also would coordinate through Slack as needed for any communication needed outside of the scheduled sessions. We had milestones to meet and they would deliver on time. Often they would present a couple options to bring back and get feedback on. If any changes were needed they were quick to do any updates at any point in the process.

What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?

They had deep design thinking skills and didn't just produce good looking designs. Durran consistently anchored design decisions in business goals and real user behavior. They challenged assumptions, clarified the problem, and ensured every design decision tied back to the outcomes we were looking for.

SalonScale has nuanced, real-time workflows used in fast-paced salon environments. Durran demonstrated a rare ability to quickly understand complex, operational products and translate that complexity into clear, usable mobile experiences without oversimplifying the underlying logic.

Are there any areas for improvement or something Durran could have done differently?

Earlier alignment on technical constraints would have helped. Some concepts pushed the product forward in the right direction but required later adjustment once engineering constraints were clearer. Bringing technical feasibility conversations (or a lightweight engineering check) slightly earlier could have reduced iteration and helped prioritize ideas with a faster path to implementation.

Most important part was developing a UX for users of the product called TypingDNA Verify, which asks the user to type a few words and authenticates them as a 2nd factor either stand alone or as OIDC factor in major IAM platforms. This was by far the biggest challenge and we went through multiple ideas, iterations, testing, etc.

We ran user experiments and testing both internally and externally, and kept the best performing UX. The whole project was designed so we can confidently pick a solution together that works for our project and our users.

Exemplary project management, they helped our team pull together resources and deliver results in the planned timeframe. Everything was well planned and documented.

I had worked with Daniel before and he had already won me over. When we decided to engage Durran, we were scaling our product team and needed alignment across planning, development, testing, and timely delivery. We also wanted external validation of our UX ideas. Durran delivered exactly that. As a product-focused entrepreneur, working with them gave me real peace of mind, like having the outcome almost guaranteed.

We identified a user persona and the activities required to be completed by them within the solution. This help achieving a better understanding of the landscape and the next steps required in continuing to validate our assumptions.

All items were delivered on time. Working with Daniel was easy and straightforward. We collaborared via a Miro board which was continuously updated to keep pace with the changes. They were always quick to adapt to new ideas and modify the core concept accordingly.

The ease with which they walk you through the process was impressive. It's a combination of creative thinking with a broad knowledge on how to validate assumptions and understand your users. This all summed up in the end, in a very clear understanding of the user actions.

In the first sessions, it felt a bit rush and unclear on how we will reach our final deliverable. But this feeling completely dissapeard in the final sessions when everyting tied together.

I'm the CTO of Flixier, an AI-powered video studio in the browser. Users can start fast with AI and then take full control to bring their content to life.

What challenge were you trying to address with Durran?

We needed help elevating the UI/UX of Flixier so that our product could better reflect the quality and innovation behind the technology.

SOLUTION

What was the scope of their involvement?

Durran has revamped our existing interface and designed new features and functionalities for Flixier. Their work includes modernizing outdated parts of the product, ensuring consistency across the platform, and creating intuitive designs for the new capabilities we're rolling out. The main deliverables are updated UI components, improved UX flows, and detailed design assets that our engineering team can implement directly.

Durran has designed a new dashboard experience for Flixier, making it easier for users to navigate and access key features. In addition, they've worked on new tools such as VideoGPT, along with several other smaller enhancements that improve the platform's overall usability and workflow.

Our main objectives are to streamline the user experience and make complex video editing workflows feel intuitive and accessible; create a modern, consistent design language that aligns with our brand identity; improve usability and onboarding, helping new users get value from Flixier faster; and collaborate closely with our engineering team to ensure design decisions are feasible and scalable. Ultimately, the goal is to deliver a product experience that delights users while supporting our growth as a platform.

From the very beginning, they took the time to understand not just our product but also our users and technical constraints. We've seen a notable increase in user engagement and retention, as the revamped UI/UX has made it easier for people to explore and adopt our features. After the redesign and new feature rollout with Durran, we've seen a 20% increase in new user accounts created (email sign-ups), alongside higher engagement with the new dashboard and tools like VideoGPT. These improvements have not only helped attract more users but also made the overall product experience smoother and more engaging.

Beyond the growth in new user accounts, we've also noticed a reduction in support requests related to navigation and onboarding since the new dashboard has made workflows more intuitive. In addition, our user satisfaction scores have improved in post-release surveys, with users highlighting the cleaner design and easier access to new features like VideoGPT. These results confirm that the design improvements are not only visually appealing but also have a tangible impact on usability and overall experience.

How did Durran perform from a project management standpoint?

Durran's project management is excellent. They keep communication clear, set realistic expectations, and are highly responsive to feedback. Despite the complexity of the work, they deliver on time and in line with the milestones we've agreed on, which makes the collaboration smooth and efficient. We communicate using Slack.

What impresses us most about working with Durran is their ability to blend creative design vision with practical execution. They don't just deliver nice-looking screens; they take the time to deeply understand our product, users, and technical constraints and then translate that into designs that are both innovative and feasible to implement.
