語源 1

Perhaps from Proto-West Germanic *tegunþ (“decad”, akin to *tehun "ten") in phrases such as Proto-West Germanic *þriddjō tegunþ (“the fourth decad”) which came to be used as ordinals, leading the initial ordinal + *-teg- to be reanalysed as a cardinal number suffixed with *tigiwi (> 古期英語 -tiġ) and the remaining -anþ/-unþ as an ordinal suffix. This was then supplied with *-ō (> 古期英語 -a) like the other ordinals, resulting in a -anþō or -unþō that regularly develops to -oþa.

Alternaitvely, a later analogical formation from seofoþa (“seventh”), eahtoþa (“eighth”), nigoþa (“ninth”), and teogoþa, alternative form of tēoþa (“tenth”), with the -o- of the root reanalysed as belonging to the suffix (etymologically -da, -ta, -þa).
