From Proto-Italic *prai, from Proto-Indo-European *préh₂i. Cognate with Old Latin *pri (“before”), as in prior, prīdiē, etc. Other Italic cognates include Oscan 𐌐𐌓𐌀𐌉 (prai) and Umbrian 𐌐𐌓𐌄 (pre).
