1. sad, sorrowful, distressed, grieving, mournful

   Hē is sāriġ, for þon þe his frēond stearf.

   He is mournful, because his friend died.

2. causing distress, causing sorrow; painful, grievous, dismal

   Þæt sāriġe spell dēþ nānne mann blīþne.

   That sorrowful story makes no person happy.

3. grieved or vexed or regretful [with for (+ dative) ‘for or (because) of something’]

使用する際の注意点

• Sāriġ was not used as an apologetic interjection.
  • In other words, one would not simply say, *Sāriġ. to apologize for something.
• To express an apology, one used these verbs:
  • One could use forġiefan (in the imperative form) or belādian (in either the imperative form, or in the indicative with a reflexive pronoun of the one apologising) can be used: Forġief þū mē lēof! Þæt nis ġīet ġearu. ("Forgive me, sir! That's not ready yet.").
  • Alternatively, ofþynċan may be used: Mē ofþyncþ þæt wē fliton ("I'm sorry that we quarrelled", literally "It displeases me that we quarrelled").
