From Proto-Italic *winkō, from Proto-Indo-European *wi-n-k-, nasal infix from *weyk- (“to overcome”), whence also Gothic 𐍅𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌽 (weihan, “to fight”) and Old Church Slavonic вѣкъ (věkŭ, “age, long period of time”).
