Possibly imitative, or possibly an alteration of 中期英語 blurden (“to wail, cry out, threaten”), or possibly from 中期英語 *blerten, *blarten, *blorten, from 古期英語 *blǣrettan, a frequentative or emphatic form of *blǣran (“to blear, bellow, roar”). If so, equivalent to blear +‎ -t.
