From Middle English, from Middle French difus (“scattered, spread out”), from Latin difusus, from diffundo (“to spread out; pour out; scatter”), from Latin dif (“apart, to pieces”) + fundo (“to pour”) + from Latin abscessus (“a going away; gathering of humors, abscess”), from abscēdō (“go away, depart”), from abs (“away from”) + cēdō (“go”).
