From 中期英語 glitenen, from 古期英語 glitnian, perhaps from Proto-Germanic *glitinōną, from a root cognate with Old Norse glitra + Proto-Germanic *-inōną. Ultimately from *ǵʰel- (“to shine, shimmer, glow”). Related to 古期英語 glisnian (“to glisten”), 古期英語 glīdan (“to glide”). Largely displaced by glitter.
