every year i’m delighted by the first entry of dracula ending with YOUR FRIEND DRACULA
no he is not. “Dracula” by Bram Stoker is my friend. Count Dracula who has tried to eat my favorite real estate lawyer four years in a row is most certainly not.
everyone reading the great divide as a message to old friends or lovers or past selves and these are all correct but I’d also like to submit: it’s the apology you never got from the one person you loved most who hurt you the worst
Bear with me because this is pretty long, but this Bestiary from ~1175 has an entire section on crime fighting dogs. Everyone loves medieval crime fighting dogs, so naturally I’m going to share the whole section.
“Often even dogs produced evidential proofs to contradict circumstances of a murder that was committed, so that most of their silent testimony is believed. The Antiochans say that in a more remote quarter of the city a certain man with a dog on a leash was killed at dusk. A subordinate of the dead man, a certain soldier intent upon
robbery, escaped. This person, hidden by darkness until dawn, withdrew in other directions. The corpse lay unburied. There was a crowd of onlookers, the dog stood near, and with mournful plaint, bewailed the fate of his master. As it happened, he who committed the murder ventured into the circle of spectators, and approached the corpse as if in sorrow, so that, in an example of the craftiness of man’s nature, he might arrogate the proof of his innocence by the presumed authority of his mingling in the crowd. Thereupon, the dog, its cries of
grief set briefly aside, took up the arms of revenge, and
seized and held the man. And like an epilogue , growling a piteous song, reduced all to tears, and destroyed the credibility of the proof of innocence, because it seized him alone from all the others and did not let him go. Then was thrown into confusion, because he could by no objection escape such plain proof of his deed, nor the hate, nor enmity, nor ill will, outrage, nor injury of anyone, and he could no longer deny the crime. And what was harder, he suffered vengeance because he could not present a defense for himself.”
This comes from Willene B. Clark’s translation.

“The horrors persist but so do libraries, books, iced coffee, sunsets, trees, the word ‘fuck’, the moon and the sea.”

you’re on your own, kid. i lost you. when my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people i’ve ghosted stand there in the room. you never cared. i guess sometimes we all get some kind of haunted. i don’t remember who i was. i’ll be getting over you my whole life. no one wanted to play with me as a little kid. i drew curtains closed, drank my poison all alone. every single thing i touch becomes sick with sadness. at the house, lonely. it must be counterfeit. i’m scared of ghosts. to a house, not a home, all alone ‘cause nobody’s there. curse the space that i needed. you always have been.
