Abstract
The invention relates to a non-aqueous liquid foul release coating composition for controlling aqueous biofouling on man-made objects comprising i) a moisture curable polysiloxane comprising repeating units of formula (I) and at least one terminal or pendant group of formula (II) and ii) at least one of a marine biocide or a non-volatile component comprising units selected from hydrocarbyl, heterocarbyl, halocarbyl, ether, ester, amide, ketone, siloxane, urethane or urea groups. The invention further relates to a substrate coated with such coating composition and to use of such coating composition to control aquatic biofouling of a man-made object.
Claims (17)
1. A non-aqueous liquid foul release coating composition for controlling aqueous biofouling on man-made objects comprising: 5 i) a moisture curable polysiloxane comprising repeating units of formula (I) and at least one terminal or pendant group of formula (II) n R1 and R2 are, independently, selected from hydrocarbyl groups having 1 to 20 carbon atoms which can optionally comprise heteroatoms or groups comprising heteroatoms, where 15 the heteroatoms are selected from oxygen, , nitrogen and silicon, and the groups comprising heteroatoms are selected from ether, ester, amide sulfide, haloalkyl, ne, urethane and urea groups; R3 and R4 are, independently, selected from hydrocarbyl groups having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, which can optionally be 20 ly linked to each other by a covalent bond to form a cyclic amine structure; A is a arbyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms; R5 is, independently, selected from alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms and groups of the formula O-R6 wherein R6 is selected from alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one R5 is a group of the formula O-R6; and ii) at least one of a marine biocide or a non-volatile component, wherein the non-volatile component comprises units ed from 5 hydrocarbyl, carbyl, halocarbyl, ether, ester, amide, ketone, siloxane, urethane or urea groups.

The foul release coating composition according to claim 1, wherein the coating composition further comprises an aminosilane of formula (III) wherein R3 to R5 and A are defined as in claim 1, and wherein at least one R5 is a group of the formula O-R6, n R6 is an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
3. The foul release coating composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein component ii) does not contain groups of a (II).
4. The foul release coating composition according to any one of the 20 preceding claims, wherein A is a methylene group.
5. The foul e coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein each of R1 and R2 is, independently, a methyl group or a phenyl group.
6. The foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein R5 is ed from C1 to C4 alkoxy groups, preferably ethoxy groups.
7. The foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the coating composition is essentially free or entirely free of a marine biocide.
8. The foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the g composition ses a le organic solvent. 10
9. The foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding , wherein the non-volatile content is in the range of 70 to 100 % by .

The foul release coating composition according to any one of the 15 preceding claims, wherein; the composition comprises an aminosilane of formula (III), and in both formulae (II) and (III); A is a methylene group; each of R1 and R2 is, independently, a methyl group or a phenyl group; 20 each of R3 and R4 is, independently, a , cyclic or branched aliphatic hydrocarbyl radical having 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and each R5 is, independently, selected from C1 to C4 alkoxy groups; and n the composition further comprises a non-volatile component selected from silicone oils, fluorinated polymers and oligomers, sterol 25 and sterol derivatives, and hydrophilic-modified polysiloxanes.
11. A substrate coated with a foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims. 30

A substrate according to claim 11, n the substrate is coated with a multi-layer coating system comprising: - optionally a primer layer applied to the substrat e and deposited from a primer coating composition; - a at layer applied to the substrate or to t he optional primer layer, deposited from a tie-coat composition comprising an binder 5 polymer with curable alkoxysilane functional groups; and - a topcoat layer d to the at layer, th e topcoat layer deposited from a liquid foul release coating composition according to any one of claims 1 to 10. 10
13. A substrate according to claim 11 or 12, wherein the tie-coat composition comprises a polyacrylate with curable alkoxysilane onal .
14. A process for controlling aquatic biofouling of a man-made object, comprising the steps of: 15 a) applying the foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims 1 to 10 to at least a part of the surface of the man-made object; b) curing the coating composition to form a cured coating layer; and c) immersing the de object at least partly in water.
15. A s according to claim 14, further comprising the step of applying a at layer deposited from a tie-coat composition as specified in claim 12 or 13 on the at least part of the surface of the man-made object before ng the foul release coating composition.
16. Use of the foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims 1 to 10 to control aquatic biofouling on man-made objects. 30
17. The foul release coating composition according to claim 1, substantially as herein described with reference to any one of the examples thereof.
