Abstract

The present invention relates to a non-aqueous liquid foul release coating composition for controlling aqueous biofouling on man-made objects, comprising a curable resin system (A) comprising i) a curable polymer free of fluorine atoms and having a backbone selected from a polyurethane, a polyether, a polyester, a polycarbonate or a hybrid of two or more thereof, and having at least one terminal or pendant alkoxysilyl group and ii) optionally a curing agent and/or a catalyst; and (B) a marine biocide and/or a non-curable, non-volatile compound is selected from the group consisting of fluorinated polymers, sterols and sterol derivatives, and hydrophilic-modified polysiloxane oils, wherein the coating composition is essentially free of a curable polysiloxane, and wherein the coating composition is essentially free of non- curable polysiloxanes other than non-curable hydrophilic-modified polysiloxane oils. The invention further relates to a substrate coated with such foul release coating composition, to a process for controlling aquatic biofouling on a surface of a man-made object using such coating composition and to the use of such coating composition for controlling aquatic biofouling on a surface of a man- made object

Claims (22)

Claims
1.
A non-aqueous liquid foul release g composition for controlling aqueous ling on man-made objects, sing: 5 (A) a curable resin system comprising i) a curable polymer free of fluorine atoms and having a backbone selected from a polyurethane, a polyether, a polyester, a polycarbonate or a hybrid of two or more thereof, and having at least one terminal or pendant alkoxysilyl group of a 10 -(C 1) 2) mH2m)-Si(R (3-n) (OR n (I) wherein: n is 1, 2 or 3; each of R1 and R2 is, independently, an alkyl radical having 1 to 6 carbon atoms; 15 m is an r with a value in the range of from 1 to 20, and ii) optionally a curing agent and/or a catalyst; and (B) a marine biocide and/or a non-curable, non-volatile compound selected from the group consisting of fluorinated polymers, sterols and sterol derivatives, and hydrophilic-modified loxane oils, 20 wherein the coating composition comprises less than 0.5 wt% of a curable polysiloxane, and wherein the coating composition comprises less than 0.5 wt% of non-curable polysiloxanes other than non-curable hydrophilic-modified polysiloxane oils. 25 2. 3. A foul release coating composition according to claim 1 or 2, wherein each of R1 and R2 is, independently, an alkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon 30 atoms.
4. A foul release g composition ing to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein curable polymer (i) has at least one or at least two silyl terminal groups of formula (I).
5 5. A foul release coating composition according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the at least one terminal or pendant alkoxysilyl group is attached to the backbone of the e polymer (i) via a urethane or a urea linkage. 10
6. A foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein m is 1 or 3.
7. A foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein R2 is a methyl or ethyl radical.
8. A foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding , wherein the curable resin system comprises a curing agent selected from the group consisting of tetra-alkoxyorthosilicates and partial condensates thereof, organofunctional silanes, and 20 combinations f.
9. A foul release coating composition according to claim 8, wherein the curing agent is a tetra-alkoxyorthosilicate or a partial condensate thereof, an organofunctional alkoxysilane selected from the group consisting of 25 amino alkoxysilanes, glycidoxy alkoxysilanes, methacryloxy alkoxysilanes, ato alkoxysilanes, and alkoxysilanes with an isocyanurate functional group, or a combination thereof.
10. A foul release coating ition according to claim 9, wherein the 30 curing agent is an organofunctional alkoxysilane with the alkoxysilyl functionality in an alpha position to the organofunctional group, and the coating composition is essentially free of a curing catalyst.
11. A foul release coating composition according to claim 10, wherein the curing agent is iethylaminomethyl)triethoxysilane.
12. A foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the coating composition is free of a marine biocide.
13. A foul release coating composition according to any one of the preceding 10 claims, n the coating composition ses a non-curable, nonvolatile compound selected from the group consisting of hydrophilicmodified loxane oils.
14. A foul release coating composition according to claim 13, wherein the 15 non-curable, non-volatile hydrophilic-modified polysiloxane oil is a poly(oxyalkylene)-modified polysiloxane.
15. A foul release coating ition according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising less than 0.1 wt% of a e polysiloxane, and less 20 than 0.1 wt% of non-curable polysiloxanes other than non-curable hydrophilic-modified polysiloxane oils.
16. A substrate coated with a foul release coating ition according to any one of the preceding claims.

A substrate according to claim 16, n the substrate is coated with a multi-layer coating system comprising: - optionally a primer layer applied to the at e and deposited from a primer coating composition; 30 - a tie-coat layer applied to the substrate or to t he optional primer layer, deposited from a tie-coat composition comprising a binder polymer with curable alkoxysilyl functional groups; and - a topcoat layer applied to the tie-coat layer, th e topcoat layer ted from a liquid foul release coating composition according to any one of claims 1 to 15.
18. A ate according to claim 16 or 17, n the tie-coat composition comprises a polyacrylate with curable alkoxysilyl functional groups.
19. A process for controlling aquatic biofouling on a surface of a de 10 object, comprising the steps of (a) applying a foul release coating composition according to any one of claims 1 to 15 to at least a part of the surface of the man-made object; (b) allowing the foul e coating composition to cure to form a 15 cured foul release coating layer; and (c) immersing the man-made object at least partly in water.
20. A process according to claim 19, further comprising the step of ng a tie-coat layer deposited from a tie-coat composition as specified in 20 claim 17 or 18 on the at least part of the surface of the man-made object before applying the foul release coating composition.
21. Use of a foul release coating composition according to any one of claims 1 to 15 to control aquatic biofouling on man-made objects.
22. The foul release coating ition according to claim 1, substantially as herein described with reference to any one of the examples thereof.
