Abstract

reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis for a human body, having: a femoral insert part (10) of the prosthesis implantable in the upper femur, and another part of the prosthesis in the pelvis, the femoral insert part having, at a proximal end thereof, a tapered shank (50') having an axis; and a femoral ball or cup element (30a/40a) having a ball or cup part (30/40) and an integrated tapered recess (50) which receives the tapered shank, wherein the ball or cup part is configured to come into interfacial contact with an acetabular cup, or an acetabular ball fitted upon a stem within a concave interior of an acetabular cup, in the other part of the prosthesis in the pelvis, the femoral ball element being rotatable about the tapered shank, and wherein the ball part extends from an intermediate stem part present between the ball part and the integrated tapered recess and a center axis of the ball part is angled with respect to, and intersects the axis of, the tapered shank; wherein the tapered shank is configured to interchangeably receive, and be affixed to, either the femoral ball element or the femoral cup element to form the reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis. The invention provides an implantable hip joint prosthesis that can be configured in a reversible manner and provide alternative configurations as may be desired or necessary.

Claims (1)

Claims:
1. A reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis for a human body, having: a femoral insert part of the prosthesis implantable in the upper femur, and another part of 5 the prosthesis in the pelvis, the femoral insert part having, at a proximal end thereof, a tapered shank having an axis; and a femoral ball element having a ball part and an integrated tapered recess which receives the tapered shank, wherein the ball part is configured to come into interfacial contact with an acetabular cup in the other part of the prosthesis in the pelvis, the femoral ball element being 10 rotatable about the tapered shank, and wherein the ball part extends from an intermediate stem part present between the ball part and the integrated tapered recess and a center axis of the ball part is angled with respect to, and intersects the axis of, the tapered shank; or, a femoral cup element having a cup part and an integrated tapered recess which receives the tapered shank, wherein the cup part is configured to come into interfacial contact with an 15 acetabular ball fitted upon a stem within a concave interior of an acetabular cup in the other part of the prosthesis in the pelvis, the femoral cup element being rotatable about the tapered shank, and wherein the cup part extends from an intermediate stem part present between the cup part and the integrated tapered recess and a center axis of the cup part is angled with respect to, and intersects the axis of, the tapered shank; 20 wherein the tapered shank is configured to interchangeably receive, and be affixed to, either the femoral ball element or the femoral cup element to form the reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis.
