Abstract

kit of differently sized component parts adapted to provide a different configurations of reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis adapted to be surgically implanted in a human body, the kit comprising: at least one femoral stem part (10) of the prosthesis implantable in the upper femur and at least one other part of the prosthesis (not shown) implantable in the pelvis, the femoral stem part comprising a tapered shank (50’) having an axis at a proximal end, the tapered shank being configured to interchangeably receive and to have affixed thereon either a femoral ball element (30) or a femoral cup element (40) to form the reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis. The kit also comprises a plurality of differently sized femoral ball elements and a plurality of differently sized femoral cup elements, where each element is rotatable about the tapered shank, and wherein the ball or cup part extends from an intermediate stem part present between the ball or cup part and the integrated tapered recess and a central axis of the ball or cup part is angled with respect to and intersects the axis of the tapered shank. The kit provides an implantable hip joint prosthesis that may be configured in a reversible manner and can provide alternative configurations as may be desired or necessary.

Claims (2)

Claims
1. A kit of differently sized component parts adapted to provide different configurations of reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis adapted to be surgically implanted in a human body, the kit 5 comprising: at least one femoral stem part of the prosthesis implantable in the upper femur and at least one other part of the prosthesis implantable in the pelvis, the femoral stem part comprising a tapered shank having an axis at a proximal end thereof which tapered shank is configured to interchangeably receive and to have affixed thereon either a femoral ball element or a femoral 10 cup element to form the reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis; and, a plurality of differently sized femoral ball elements, each having a ball part and an integrated tapered recess which is not within the ball part which is configured to receive the tapered shank, wherein the femoral ball element is rotatable about the tapered shank, and wherein the ball part extends from an intermediate stem part present between the ball part and 15 the integrated tapered recess and a center axis of the ball part is angled with respect to and intersects the axis of the tapered shank; and, a plurality of differently sized femoral cup elements, each having a cup part and an integrated tapered recess which is not within the femoral cup which is configured to receive the tapered shank, wherein the femoral cup element is rotatable about the tapered shank, and wherein 20 the cup part extends from an intermediate stem part present between the femoral cup part and the integrated tapered recess and a center axis of the femoral cup part is angled with respect to and intersects the axis of the tapered shank and further wherein the femoral cup part is configured to come into interfacial contact with an acetabular ball fitted upon a stem within a concave interior of an acetabular cup; 25 wherein the tapered shank may receive and be affixed to either the femoral ball element or the femoral cup element to form the reconfigurable hip joint prosthesis.
2. The kit according to claim 1, which comprises a plurality of femoral stems.
