Abstract
double-cylinder deadbolt door lock assembly comprising a deadbolt mechanism with a bolt arranged for sliding movement along a bolt axis between retracted and extended configurations, and first and second actuators provided for operating the deadbolt mechanism, in use, from respective sides of the door, the first and second actuators comprising respective key operated lock cylinders, wherein the axes of rotation of the lock cylinders are transverse to the bolt axis, and offset from one another so as to be disposed to opposite sides of the bolt axis.
Claims (18)
1. A deadbolt door lock mechanism including a slidable bolt having an elongate form with first and second rack gears disposed on opposed sides along a length thereof, and first and second user rotatable actuators coupled to rotate 5 respective first and second pinion gears that in use engage the respective first and second rack gears on the bolt, whereby rotation of the one and/or the other of the pinion gears effects sliding movement of the bolt.
2. A deadbolt door lock mechanism according to claim 1 wherein the first and 10 second actuators each comprise a key operated lock cylinder.
3. A deadbolt door lock mechanism according to claim 1 wherein the first actuator comprises a key operated lock cylinder and the second actuator comprises a user rotatable turn-snib.
4. A deadbolt door lock assembly for installation within a door structure having first and second side faces and a door edge, the assembly comprising a deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3 with the bolt arranged for sliding movement along a bolt axis between retracted and extended 20 configurations wherein the bolt, in use, protrudes from the door edge when in the extended configuration, the first and second actuators provided for operating the deadbolt in use, from respective sides of the door, each of the first and second actuators being contained at least substantially between the faces of the door when installed therein.
5. A deadbolt door lock assembly according to claim 4 wherein the deadbolt mechanism includes an elongate housing that supports the bolt for sliding movement along the bolt axis, the housing being mounted in use within said door structure.
6. A deadbolt door lock assembly according to claim 5 wherein the housing is in use mounted such that the bolt axis extends substantially horizontally.
7. A deadbolt door lock assembly according to claim 6 wherein the first and 5 second actuators are respectively disposed above and below the bolt axis.
8. A deadbolt door lock assembly for installation within the structure of a hinged door having first and second side faces on either side of a vertical swinging edge that is opposite a hinged edge of the door, the assembly including: 10 a deadbolt mechanism according to claim 1, the deadbolt mechanism being adapted for installation in the door and the bolt being arranged for sliding movement along a bolt axis between retracted and extended configurations wherein the bolt, in use, protrudes from the swinging edge of the door when in the extended configuration; 15 wherein the first actuator includes a lock cylinder with a key rotation axis perpendicular to the bolt axis and a keyway slot accessible from the first side face of the door, the lock cylinder being, in use, at least substantially contained within the door structure between the first and second side faces; and the second actuator comprises one of: 20 a lock cylinder with a key rotation axis perpendicular to the bolt axis and a keyway slot accessible from the second side face of the door, the lock cylinder being, in use, at least substantially contained within the door structure between the first and second side faces; or a user rotatable turn-snib accessible from the second side face of 25 the door.
9. A deadbolt door lock assembly according to any one of claims 5 to 7, wherein the housing supports a bolt assembly, the bolt assembly comprising a bolt shaft of the bolt coupled to a bolt head of the bolt that extends from the 30 housing when in the extended configuration, the mechanism further including a retraction latch actuated by the bolt shaft that prevents an external force exerted on the bolt head from causing movement of the bolt from the extended configuration to the retracted configuration.
10. A deadbolt door lock assembly according to any one of claims 5 to 9, 5 wherein the slidable bolt has a transverse width that allows the respective first and second pinion gears to engage therewith across a range of alignments so as to permit installation of the lock assembly in doors having a range of thicknesses.
11. A deadbolt door lock mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3 10 including a housing that supports a bolt assembly for sliding motion along a bolt axis between retracted and extended configurations, the bolt assembly comprising a bolt shaft of the bolt coupled to a bolt head of the bolt that extends from the housing when in the extended configuration, the mechanism further including a retraction latch actuated by the bolt shaft that prevents an external 15 force exerted on the bolt head from causing movement of the bolt from the extended configuration to the retracted configuration.
12. A deadbolt door lock mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3 and 11, wherein the slidable bolt has a transverse width that allows the respective 20 first and second pinion gears to engage therewith across a range of alignments.
13. A deadbolt door lock mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3, 11 and 12, wherein free rotational movement of each of the first and second pinion gears coaxial with the respective first and second actuators is confined by an 25 engaging tab that projects radially inward from each of the first and second pinion gears within a freewheel slot on each of the first and second actuators.
14. A deadbolt door lock mechanism according to claim 13, wherein the circumferential extent of the freewheel slot is defined by first and second gear 30 engaging shoulders formed on each of the first and second actuators.
15. A method of installing a deadbolt door lock assembly, the method comprising: creating apertures in first and second side faces and an edge of a door; inserting the deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 3 5 and 11 to 14 from the edge of the door; inserting internal and external actuator assemblies from the respective first and second sides of the door; aligning the first and second actuators with the respective first and second pinion gears; and 10 locating the first and second pinion gears in meshing arrangement with the respective first and second rack gears.
16. A deadbolt door lock mechanism according to claim 1, the deadbolt door lock mechanism being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to 15 figures 4A-30 of the accompanying drawings.
17. A deadbolt door lock assembly according to claim 4 or claim 8, the deadbolt door lock assembly being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to figures 4A-30 of the accompanying drawings.
18. A method according to claim 15, the method being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to figures 4A-30 of the accompanying drawings.
