Abstract
deadbolt mechanism for installation within a door structure including a housing that supports a bolt assembly for sliding motion along a bolt axis between retracted and extended configurations, the bolt assembly comprising a bolt shaft coupled to a bolt head that extends from the housing when in the extended configuration, the mechanism further including a retraction latch actuated by the bolt shaft that prevents an external force exerted on the bolt head from causing movement of the bolt from the extended configuration to the retracted configuration, wherein the retraction latch includes a ball bearing located in a cavity inside the housing, wherein the cavity is located between a profiled track in the bolt shaft and a rear edge of the bolt head, wherein the profiled track has an enlarged forward end, a narrowed rear end, and a shoulder between the forward end and the rear end, and wherein, when the bolt shaft is projected forward during movement of the bolt assembly from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration, the shoulder is arranged to bear on the ball bearing, which in turn is arranged to bear on the rear edge of the bolt head to thereby force the bolt head to also project forward.
Claims (18)
1. A deadbolt mechanism for installation within a door structure including a housing that supports a bolt assembly for sliding motion along a bolt axis between 5 retracted and extended configurations, the bolt assembly comprising a bolt shaft coupled to a bolt head that extends from the housing when in the extended configuration, the mechanism further including a retraction latch actuated by the bolt shaft that prevents an external force exerted on the bolt head from causing movement of the bolt from the extended configuration to the retracted 10 configuration, wherein the retraction latch includes a ball bearing located in a cavity inside the housing, wherein the cavity is located between a profiled track in the bolt shaft and a rear edge of the bolt head, wherein the profiled track has an enlarged forward end, a narrowed rear end, and a shoulder between the forward end and the rear end, and wherein, when the bolt shaft is projected 15 forward during movement of the bolt assembly from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration, the shoulder is arranged to bear on the ball bearing, which in turn is arranged to bear on the rear edge of the bolt head to thereby force the bolt head to also project forward. 20
2. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 1, wherein the ball bearing is arranged to roll along an inside face of the housing within the cavity during movement of the bolt assembly between the retracted and extended configurations. 25
3. A deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the ball bearing is arranged to drop into a depression in the housing, of the bolt assembly from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration, such that an upper surface of the ball bearing drops below the shoulder as the bolt assembly moves from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration, 30 such that an upper surface of the ball bearing drops below the shoulder so that the bolt shaft no longer exerts further forward force on the bolt head.
4. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 3, wherein in the extended configuration, the ball bearing is captured in the depression by the narrowed rear end of the profiled track.
5. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 4, wherein, when the bolt assembly is in the extended configuration, the narrowed rear end of profiled track prevents the ball bearing from moving out of the depression in response to an external force exerted on the bolt head.
6. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 4 or claim 5, wherein, as the bolt assembly moves from the extended configuration to the retracted configuration, the enlarged forward end of the profiled track locates above the ball bearing, thereby allowing the ball bearing to move out of the depression.
7. A deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 6, further comprising first and second user rotatable actuators coupled to rotate respective first and second pinion gears that in use engage the respective first and second rack gears on the bolt shaft, whereby rotation of the one and/or the other of the 20 pinion gears effects sliding movement of the bolt.
8. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 7, wherein the first and second actuators each comprise a key operated lock cylinder. 25
9. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 7, wherein the first actuator comprises a key operated lock cylinder and the second actuator comprises a user rotatable turn-snib.
10. A deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the 30 bolt shaft has a transverse width that allows the respective first and second pinion gears to engage therewith across a range of alignments so as to permit installation of the lock assembly in doors having a range of thicknesses.
11. A deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claims 7 to 10, wherein 5 free rotational movement of each of the first and second pinion gears coaxial with the respective first and second actuators is confined by an engaging tab that projects radially inward from each of the first and second pinion gears within a freewheel slot on each of the first and second actuators. 10
12. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 11, wherein the circumferential extent of the freewheel slot is defined by first and second gear engaging shoulders formed on each of the first and second actuators.
13. A deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claims 7 to 12, wherein 15 the first and second actuators provided for operating the deadbolt in use, from respective sides of a door, each of the first and second actuators being contained at least substantially between the faces of the door when installed therein.
14. A deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein 20 the housing supports the bolt assembly for sliding movement along the bolt axis, the housing being mounted in use within a door structure having first and second side faces and a door edge.
15. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 14, wherein the housing is in 25 use mounted such that the bolt axis extends substantially horizontally.
16. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 15, wherein the first and second actuators are respectively disposed above and below the bolt axis.
17. A deadbolt mechanism according to any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein in the extended configuration, the bolt shaft extends into a void formed in the bolt head. 5
18. A deadbolt mechanism according to claim 1, the deadbolt door lock mechanism being substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to figures 4A-30 of the accompanying drawings.
