Abstract

There is provided a gel comprising (i) water in an amount of from 1 to 20 wt.% based on the gel; (ii) nicotine; and (iii) a water soluble acid. The is further provided a crystalline powder comprising (i) water in an amount of less than 15% wt.% based on the crystalline powder; (ii) nicotine; (iii) a water soluble acid; (iv) one or more flavours; and (v) an encapsulating material.

Claims (31)

1. A gel comprising (i) water in an amount of from 1 to 20 wt.% based on the gel; 5 (ii) nicotine present in an amount of from 50 to 75 wt.% based on the gel; and (iii) a water soluble acid having a solubility in water of at least 20g/L at 20°C, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 3:1 to 1:3.
2. A gel according to claim 1 wherein water is present in an amount of from 1 to 15 10 wt.% based on the gel.
3. A gel according to claim 1 or 2 wherein water is present in an amount of from 1 to 10 wt.% based on the gel. 15
4. A crystalline powder comprising (i) water in an amount of less than 8% wt.% based on the crystalline powder; (ii) nicotine; (iii) a water soluble acid having a solubility in water of at least 20g/L at 20°C; (iv) one or more flavours; and 20 (v) an encapsulating material, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 3:1 to 1:3.
5. A crystalline powder according to claim 4 wherein the nicotine is present in an amount of no greater than 10 wt.% based on the crystalline powder.
6. A crystalline powder according to claim 5 wherein nicotine is present in an amount of from 1 to 3 wt.% based on the crystalline powder.
7. A gel according to any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine 30 is from 2:1 to 1:2.
8. A crystalline powder according to any one of claims 4 to 6, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 2:1 to 1:2. 35
9. A gel according to any one of claims 1 to 3 or 7 wherein the water soluble acid is selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, lactic acid, formic acid, citric acid, pyruvic acid, levulinic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, propionic acid, and mixtures thereof.
10. A crystalline powder according to any one of claims 4 to 6 or 8, wherein the water soluble acid is selected from the group consisting of acetic acid, lactic acid, formic acid, citric acid, pyruvic acid, levulinic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid, propionic acid, and mixtures 5 thereof.
11. A gel according to any one of claims 1 to 3, 7 or 9 wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, levulinic acid, lactic acid, and mixtures thereof. 10
12. A crystalline powder according to any one of claims 4 to 6, 8 or 10 wherein the acid is selected from the group consisting of citric acid, levulinic acid, lactic acid, and mixtures thereof.
13. A gel according to any one of claims 1 to 3, 7, 9 or 11 wherein the water soluble acid 15 is at least citric acid.
14. A crystalline powder according to any one of claims 4 to 6, 8, 10 or 12 wherein the water soluble acid is at least citric acid. 20
15. A crystalline powder according to any one of claims 4 to 6, 8, 10, 12 or 14 wherein the encapsulating material is one or more cyclodextrins.
16. A crystalline powder according to claim 15 wherein the one or more cyclodextrins are selected from the group consisting of substituted or unsubstituted (a)-cyclodextrin, 25 substituted or unsubstituted (ß)-cyclodextrin, substituted or unsubstituted ( ?)-cyclodextrin, and mixtures thereof.
17. A crystalline powder according to claim 15 or claim 16 wherein the one or more cyclodextrins are present in a total amount of no greater than 85 wt.% based on the 30 crystalline powder.
18. A crystalline powder according to any one of claims 15 to 17 wherein the one or more cyclodextrins are present in a total amount of from 50 to 85 wt.% based on the crystalline powder.

A crystalline powder according to any one of claims 4 to 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 or 15 to 18 wherein the one or more flavours are selected from the group consisting of (4-(para- )methoxyphenyl)butanone, vanillin, ?-undecalactone, menthone, 5-propenyl guaethol, menthol, para-menthathiolone and mixtures thereof.
20. A crystalline powder according to claim 19 wherein the flavour is at least menthol.
21. A crystalline powder according to claim 19 or claim 20 wherein the one or more flavours are present in a total amount of no greater than 2wt.% based on the crystalline powder. 10
22. A crystalline powder according to any one of claims 19 to 21 wherein the one or more flavours are present in a total amount of from 0.01 to 1wt.% based on the crystalline powder.
23. A process for forming a gel comprising (i) water in an amount of from 1 to 20 wt.% based on the gel; 15 (ii) nicotine present in an amount of from 50 to 75 wt.% based on the gel; and (iii) a water soluble acid having a solubility in water of at least 20g/L at 20°C, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 3:1 to 1:3; the process comprising the steps of: (a) providing a nicotine solution comprising 20 (i) water in an amount of from 50 to 90 wt.% based on the nicotine solution; (ii) nicotine; and (iii) the water soluble acid; (b) dehydrating the nicotine solution to provide the gel. 25
24. A process according to claim 23 wherein the gel is a gel as defined in any one of claims 1 to 3, 7, 9, 11 or 13.

A process for forming a crystalline powder comprising (i) water in an amount of less than 8 wt% based on the crystalline powder; 30 (ii) nicotine; (iii) a water soluble acid having a solubility in water of at least 20g/L at 20°C; (iv) one or more flavours; and (v) an encapsulating material, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 3:1 to 1:3; 35 the process comprising the steps of: (a) providing a nicotine solution comprising (i) water in an amount of from 50 to 95 wt.% based on the nicotine solution; (ii) nicotine; (iii) a water soluble acid; (iv) one or more flavours; and (v) an encapsulating material; 5 (b) dehydrating the nicotine solution to provide the crystalline powder.
26. A process according to claim 25 wherein the crystalline powder is a crystalline powder as defined in any one of claims 4 to 6, 8, 10, 12 or 14 to 22. 10

A process according to claim 25 or 26 the process comprising the steps of: (a) contacting a gel as defined in any one of claims 1 to 3, 7, 9, 11 or 13 with a flavour solution comprising (iii) a water soluble acid; (iv) one or more flavours; and 15 (v) an encapsulating material; to form a nicotine solution (b) dehydrating the nicotine solution to provide the crystalline powder.
28. A process for rehydrating a gel comprising 20 (i) water in an amount of from 1 to 20 wt.% based on the gel; (ii) nicotine present in an amount of from 50 to 75 wt.% based on the gel; and (iii) a water soluble acid having a solubility in water of at least 20g/L at 20°C, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 3:1 to 1:3; the process comprising the step of contacting the gel with water.
29. A process for rehydrating a crystalline powder comprising (i) water in an amount of less than 8% wt.% based on the crystalline powder; (ii) nicotine; (iii) a water soluble acid having a solubility in water of at least 20g/L at 20°C;
30. 30 (iv) one or more flavours; and (v) an encapsulating material; wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 3:1 to 1:3, the process comprising the step of contacting the crystalline powder with water. 35 30. A contained gel comprising (a) a container; and (b) a gel, comprising (i) water in an amount of from 1 to 20 wt.% based on the gel; (ii) nicotine present in an amount of from 50 to 75 wt.% based on the gel; and (iii) a water soluble acid having a solubility in water of at least 20g/L at 20°C, wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 3:1 to 1:3.
31. A contained crystalline powder comprising (a) a container; and (b) a crystalline powder, comprising (i) water in an amount of less than 8% wt.% based on the crystalline powder; 10 (ii) nicotine; (iii) a water soluble acid having a solubility in water of at least 20g/L at 20°C; (iv) one or more flavours; and (v) an encapsulating material wherein the molar ratio of acid to nicotine is from 3:1 to 1:3. -1 -0.5 0 0.5 1.0 1.5 log [conc]
