Abstract
cushion assembly for a patient interface includes a foam cushion and an elastomeric support portion configured to support the foam cushion. The foam cushion is more compliant in a nasal bridge region than other regions of the cushion assembly, the nasal bridge region being a region configured to engage the patient's nasal bridge when the cushion assembly is mounted on the patient's face. The elastomeric support portion may also provide varying levels of support to the foam cushion in different regions of the cushion assembly.
Claims (18)
1. A n assembly for a patient interface for sealed delivery of a flow of air at a continuously positive re with t to ambient air pressure to an entrance to a t's airways including at least ce of a patient's nares, wherein the patient interface is configured to maintain a therapy pressure in a range of about 4 cmH20 to about 30 cmH20 above ambient air pressure in use, throughout the patient's respiratory cycle, while the patient is sleeping, to ameliorate sleep disordered breathing, the cushion assembly comprising: a foam cushion configured to sealingly engage the patient’s face; an elastomeric support structure configured to support the foam cushion and form at least part of a plenum chamber with the foam cushion, the elastomeric support structure comprising a first leg and a second leg in the form of a folded section extending radially inward from the first leg, the foam cushion overhanging the folded section; and a pair of ribs positioned to be on opposite sides of the patient’s nose in use so that the elastomeric t structure es different levels of support in different regions of the meric support structure, each rib being attached to a side of the folded section of the elastomeric support structure that is opposite a side of the folded section to which the foam n is attached, wherein the folded section acts as a seat for the foam cushion, and n the foam cushion overhangs the folded section to allow the foam cushion to roll inward toward an interior of the plenum chamber in response to a compressive force acting on the foam cushion.
2. The cushion assembly of claim 1, wherein a width of the folded section varies in different regions of the elastomeric support structure.
3. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 2, wherein an amount of the foam cushion that overhangs the folded section varies in different regions of the cushion assembly.
4. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the folded section forms an angle with the first leg.
5. The n assembly of claim 4, wherein the angle between the folded section and the first leg varies in different regions of the meric support structure.
6. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 5, n the ribs are compressible.
7. The n assembly of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the ribs are more resistant to tension than compression.
8. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the ribs are oned at a region corresponding to the least compressible section of the elastomeric support structure
9. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the elastomeric support structure is more compressible at a nasal bridge portion of the cushion assembly that is configured to engage the patient’s nasal bridge in use.
10. The cushion assembly of claim 9, wherein the elastomeric t structure is less compressible at a chin portion than at the nasal bridge portion, and wherein the chin portion is at a location on the cushion ly configured to engage the patient’s chin in
11. The cushion assembly of claim 10, wherein the elastomeric support structure is least compressible in intermediate regions between the nasal bridge portion and the chin portion.
12. The cushion assembly of claim 11, wherein the ribs are positioned in the intermediate regions.
13. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the ribs have the same elastomeric wall thickness.
14. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the ribs have different elastomeric wall thicknesses.
15. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein a wall thickness of the elastomeric support structure varies in different regions of the cushion assembly.
16. The cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein a depth of the elastomeric support structure varies in ent s of the cushion ly.
17. A patient interface comprising: the cushion assembly of any one of claims 1 to 16; a rigid shell bly connected to the cushion assembly; and headgear removably attached to the rigid shell.
18. A CPAP system comprising: the patient interface according to claim 17; a flow generator ured to pressurize a flow of gas; and an air delivery tube configured to deliver the pressurized gas to the patient interface. 3000 \\\\\\\\\\\“lm uu|\\“““
